DS' laptop has a blank screen. Can't figure it out. I want to connect it to an external monitor to see if it is the computer or the screen that is the problem. I know you plug the monitor cord into the laptop, but how do I tell the laptop to use the external monitor, since I can't see to do anything on the laptop? Anyone know?

Sure..

most laptop will allow you to hit the Function key and then a F-key to swap output.

Many use F4, but look at your laptop to see the icon near the Fkey that shows a box with another box inside it.. I know, hard to explain!

Hold downt he function key (might be FN on the bottom left side) and hit that F4 (or whatever number) to change the output..

Ugh, now I turned the thing off and it won't turn back on. I have a feeling this is something to do with where the screen connects to the laptop body. Something in there is not connected tightly, or so it seems. Once in awhile I'll get it to come on and it seems to be making the same noises as when it did work. We had to ship to HP for a similar problem when it was still under warranty.

Thanks for the advice. When it decides to let me turn it on, I will check to see if the external monitor trick works.
