Help with budget/car decision please?

So, my car needs a new transmission and we don't think it's worth fixing. So do we sell it for $400 (someone has made an offer) or do we donate it to a good cause and get a tax benefit? Which would be better?

Sell the car.

Many charities end up owing wholesalers after they receive car donations, and get no money for their cause (this is true even of working cars that are newer model years). Additionally the tax laws have changed and you may not realize the write off you expect. Must better to sell the car, and if you want to make a donation send the charity money.

Our accountant advised the same thing...to sell the car on our own.
