My 9 yr old sons share a room and their dresser just broke. Since it was a cheap dresser dh had before we got married, we'd been expecting it and they were outgrowing it, anyway. They have two pretty big closets, 4.5 ft wide X 3.5 ft deep. I'd like to put all the clothes in the closets so they have more room without dressers in the room. Any suggestions on how to do it? Should I get them chest of drawers but put them in the closet or get a closet system (like at Ikea)? What will be the easiest for them to use so they actually put their clothes away and will grow with them? Boys don't use a lot of clothes on hangers, right?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks! :goodvibes

I don't have a dresser for my son at all. I have all of his jeans, shorts, and shirts hanging in the closet. Then I bought the cheapo plastic bins with slide out drawers (I think they are like $12?) and put his underwear in one, socks in one, and shoes in one. (He only has 4 pairs of shoes.) Swimsuit is in the underwear drawer. That is in his closet as well. He has a tiny bedroom, so I had to maximize space. If you have the space for your boys' clothes, I wouldn't even bother with a dresser.

We just switched things around for DS10. His dresser is too small for his stuff so we moved him to the closet. We already had some of those wire square panels that hook together into cubes. He has 6 cubes so there are sections for short sleeve shirts, shorts, bathing suits, etc. His jeans are on the other side of the closet because there is a shelf about kid height with hanging bars above & below it. He doesn't hang anything but his Scout shirt & some dressier stuff.

He keeps socks, underwear & pjs in the little dresser but he could easily put it in another cube. Very easy to find stuff and no worries about drawers to smoosh shut since he tends to search and not fold things back up all the way.

Although you would think boys don't use closets, my boy did. He hated putting things in draws and told me they always got wrinkled. So when he started doing his own laundry he hung everything up. I soon found out that he did not like to fold. ;) It was just easier for him to hang things.

My suggestion:

If you can get draws under the bed, that would help with sweatshirts and sweat pants, which are big and bulky as they get older.

One side of the closet should have shelves for t-shirts, sweaters, and jeans.
Hang, better shirts and pants, shoes at the bottom.

I would not put a dresser in the closet. They never see the clothes at the bottom of the draw and as they get older, the draws just get over loaded.

In a closet they can see everything and it is also so much easier to weed out clothes as they out grow them. Which happens very fast with boys!

I have the Ikea system in my closet. Large walk in. There are no clothes in my dresser, high boy, or night tables. Really I mean it, there is nothing in them. Everything is hung up. I love it. So much easier to keep organized.

I love Ikea for organization!

Closet organizer :thumbsup2

Good clothes and school clothes are kept seperate on higher shelves or hung up

Everyday clothes are folded and put where they are easy access for the kids.

my boys also shared a dresser and it just broke last month so I'm still hunting for the perfect replacement but in the meantime, I've got their shorts, pjs, and underwear in bins in their organizers. We have several 9cube organizers from Target and I just took over one of them. It's working really well and I just added 2 more bins for their uniform shorts(I'll swap those out for pants in the fall).

I already hang up all their tops so those just stayed put. I did have the dresser in the closet before and it kept all their clothes mess out of the toys.

This is exactly what I have for all of my boys.

Thanks for the replies! Glad to know that should work. Can't wait to go to Ikea now! :-)

It must be the season of broken dressers and closet organizers because we did the same thing. Our DDs dresser broke (DD 5 used the drawers to climb on like a lader) and I switched to a closet organizer. We have bins for the majority of their clothes and it's worked out better than the dresser. Since the one i bought was a temporary solution I'm now looking at more efficient means of storage that allows more clothingto be hung. But the pullout storage drawers are great for things like socks, underware, and pajamas, hats/mittens, and swimsuits.

I've done the same thing since ds was little and he's 17 now. I even have top rack for nice shirts and bottom for crappy shirts. He works on cars so if I don't separate his shirts, he'll ruin his nice shirts. I even have done this for my husband and it makes it soo much easier for him to get ready for work.

I hang all the shirts- I hate folding shirts, because they just get all messed up as they dig through looking for the one that they want.

So everything hangs, and then DH built a shelf about 2 feet off the closet floor, and I bought baskets to put jeans and shorts in one, PJs in another, and unders in a third. Works perfect. We might have to adjust it as he gets older and his shirts get longer. lol

I hang all shirts too. They wrinkle if I put them in drawers. Our house has walk in closets in all the bedrooms. My oldest daughter has a dresser in her closet to hold underwear, socks, jeans, bathing suits, etc. My other daughter has a closet system because her closet is a little smaller. Both methods work fine.

My ds's room is the smallest in the house so we have to be creative with organizing. We keep his dresser in the closet. It takes up one half of the closet, the other side is where all the clothes hang. Underneath where the clothes hang are low shelves for lego bins, board games etc. The large shelf on top holds boxes of out of season clothing, extra shoes etc.
This leaves all of his floor space for bunk beds and a lego table/desk combo.
It works really well and is far tidier than my dd's (15) room. She has a ton of space and seems to use every inch of it for mess:crazy2:

I hang up all the shirts and fold pants and put them in the drawer. Shorts are under the bed in bins and PJ's, socks, and underwear are in drawers.
