My DS is 14 months old and I'm not sure if he is sick or if he has a runny nose and cough from teething (his molars are coming in). He hasn't been eating or drinking much the last few days. I've haven't gotten through to the docor's office yet. Does anyone have any advice or suggesttions?

Don't worry so much about him not eating. It is perfectly normal. Just try to get him to drink. If he uses a bottle still the sucking will make his teeth feel better. If not then offer an ice pop. That will give him some liquids and make him feel a bit better too. I hope he feels better soon!

I have to agree with the other poster. Fluids are more important than food when your sick, especially if he is running a fever. My son, never eats when is sick. Pedialyte, water, juices (Water them down) are the best.

My guess is he is sick.I dont think coughing can be caused by teething. As others have said as long as he drinks he will be fine. Ice pops work well - kids think its a treat- and if you try food, id reccomend jello, or watermelon (both high in water content)Even flat ginger ale is good, (again kids think its a treat to have soda). If he gets a fever, or if it continues for more than a few days then id take him to the Dr.

Actually, my ds did cough while teething, and ran fevers (yes, we did confirm with dr. visits that was the cause of both). Spit/drool would constantly run down his throat, and he didn't know how to clear it out properly at the time.

Fluids are a must. Also, if he is teething, have you tried the baby orajel? When ds wouldn't eat because of teething pain, we used the baby orajel (in addition to the tubes, they also have some that come in q-tip type things. Shap the end on one side, the orajel flows to the other tip. Easy to apply.). We would also let him chew on a frozen washcloth. That would help numb the sore spot, and get him a little dose of water at the same time as the washcloth thawed out.

Good luck!

This is exactly the trick. Nice and cold on the gums can help the discomfort and keep hydrated.
Good luck!

My DS coughed, and ran a fever while teething. Is it not a blast trying to fingure these things out? Just as others said, lots of fluids are best. When DS was about a year old and was teethng we let him have ice cold sprite in a bottle to suck on. Now soda was pretty much a no no till he was like 5 but that was the only thing that seemed to help and some times you do what you have to do. HOWEVER, if symptoms continue, take him to the dr to make sure. BTW- DS also had terrible diaper while teething. We made lots of trips to the dr before we got those teeth in!!!
