Hello,

This is my first post! I'm looking for some guidance on a character dining experience for my mum who will be the grand old age of 63 when we are holidaying in Florida next May. I'm looking for recommendations for a special character birthday celebration dinner that you could suggest, for the 'big night'. Really looking for something with Mickey and friends to come out singing Happy Birthday! :cool1: Not sure if Dine with Shamu is back on yet, or not, as that was another (slightly more 'grown up') special occasion meal experience. We will have my daughter with us (who will be 7) and the whole birthday celebration is for her benefit too (she's big on celebrations!).

So, what would you recommend?

Hi - and welcome to the Dis

Not sure if what you are suggesting is actually possible. Remember that the likes of Mickey and Minnie are none speaking characters so would be unable to 'sing' Happy Birthday. The nearest I have seen to this was when they gathered around a table at Chef Mickeys and a birthday song came over the speakers while everyone in the restaurant waved their napkins in the air.
I would suggest -as your first point of contact - to get in touch with Disney Dining and ask what they would be able to recommend/offer. It might just be a simple case of mentioning that it is one of your parties birthday when you call up to make your ADR, or it may need more planning.
Good luck

Thanks Pegasus, yes it's the more the characters coming up to the table with the music blasting from the speakers type of thing I was thinking about. We saw it happen a few times at Cafe Mickey in Disneyland Paris, and my mum found it highly amusing to watch. She'll find it hilarious and DD would be so excited to see Mickey or whoever to come over and make a fuss of her gran.

Chef Mickeys sounds like the place to make enquiries with. I'll get onto that shortly.

Thanks again for your help.

I would say the closest thing to cafe mickey at DLRP at WDW - is Chef Mickeys in the Contemporary Resort - where you have Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto and Donald.

You can get dinner here - however note that it is buffet, and although I have never been there personally I have read a lot of mixed reveiws on this - and the bad reviews have particularly stood out to me - however you do get a lot of people who love it here too :goodvibes

Another thing, is there is no guarantee that anyone will make a fuss for her birthday - even if you do make a note on the reservation that you are celebrating. I would say one of the ways to increase your chances and to make things a bit extra special would be to pre-order a birthday cake to be taken out at the meal - you can get some fantastic cakes made!

Thanks izzie wizzie,

I didn't realise it was so different from DLP. I was hoping it would be on the same scale iyswim? When we have been in Cafe Mickey's and they bring out the cake with the music, it always looks fun, and I just assumed they would have the same kind of experience. You can tell I'm a novice with WDW can't you  I've been like this :surfweb: since we booked on saturday. I have a lot to learn I think!

Thanks again for you replies, most helpful.

we have celebrated birthdays at Akershus where one of the princesses did bring the cake out (but didn't sing happy birthday) and CP - the cakes were amazing at both (ordered in advance and very pricey) but at neither venue did we get a song if that is what you are looking for (would have embarassed the hell out of us). Got a signed card at both from the characters though.

Mark it on your reservations though for everywhere in your trip as some places will decorate your dessert plate with the words happy birhtday, some will give you a complimentary cupcake and others a card. One of the nicest cards my ds ever had was at Boma, signed in all the different languages 'happy birhtday' in each language and the country in Africa it was from :goodvibes:

we were just at chef mickey's on saturday night and the food was outstanding!!

we were really surprised, as in the past it has been medicre at best!

and they brought out two cute little celebration cupcakes for our two honeymooning couples.

as for the crystal palace, we were there for lunch last week and the food was terrible - again surprising as in the past the food there has always been good, but not this time...
