I've never rented/transfered points before, but due to a Covid inspired cancellation, I know have 265 points, from my August 2019 use year, that I must use by July 31st Probably not happening, so my only other option is to transfer to RCI by June (really have no interest in RCI)
Any advice from first time renters? There must be others who've found themselves in a position similar to mine, thanks to Covid Does it matter which resort these points are from, since it's about 7 months to the end of my UY? This all happened just last night, and I'm still unsure of so much Any advice would help

Sounds like you have banked points that will be expiring. Banked points cannot be transferred.

If you cannot use them yourself, your options are to deposit them to RCI or rent them by making a reservation for someone else.

Thanks! I didn't know that And I didn't know how the renting of points worked, that I'd have to make the reservation Do the people renting the points generally have a particular resort they want to stay at? Come to think of it, how do they know how many points to rent? Aargh! This is getting more and more confusing

Look at the Rent/Trade board here. Read the stickies up top and then read through some of the posts. I think that might help a lot! Yes, the renters usually have a resort in mind as well as dates and villa size. Not all of them are reasonable - for instance, at 5 months out want to book a standard view studio at BWV the week between Christmas & NY - which is why the rental agencies exist.

Renters don’t actually rent points but rent a reservation made with your points.

Basically, you find someone who wants to rent, and you book it for them, and they pay you,

But, be sure to read about it and get advice via contracts and terms because given Covid, things haven’t gone so well, depending on the particular situation.

Point charts can be found several places by renters but they do often look to you to provide them with the point total when they inquire about renting. Really not any different than making your own reservations except you don't have to decide on the dates and locations - the renters will decide what they're looking for and then you book it in their names.

I think that you will find that potential renters come with a varying degree of knowledge.
  • Some will want to book 11 months out at a resort that you don’t own at.
  • Some have their sights set on low-point, hard-to-get rooms like an AKV value studio at 3 month out.
  • Some have no idea how many points their reservation would take and then are shocked by the cost because someone told them that renting DVC is cheaper than staying at a Value Resort.
  • Some want you to come down in price because they saw someone posting points on Facebook for $8 apiece.
  • Some know the value of what you’re offering, the scarcity of those cheap rooms and are flexible with their resort preferences and/or dates.
TBH, if you’re going to rent points out on your own, you’re going to need patience. But there are agencies that will act as a matchmaker for you and potential renters. They tend to pay less than what you can get on your own and you really need to understand the contract you’re entering into with them (at least one agency will expect the owner to refund all monies received if there is a forced closure of the resort during the rental period). However, using an agency is pretty hassle-free and can be an easy way for owners renting their points out for the first time.

You say you have no interest in RCI but have you looked? Pre-pandemic we traveled 4-5 times a year for college football games with extended stay, out of town wedding with extended stay, business travel that we want to turn into a vacation. Even Europe. First thing I do is check RCI to see what is available nearby. We have stayed in some very nice resorts and a few "meh" ones, nothing bad. We have 800 points and grown kids so we use ~half our points for non-DVC stays. If you transfer the points you have (I think) two years to use them....plan a non-Disney Vaca!
