Help! Puerto Rico car rental agency says I put diesel in gas tank

No way in the world I would pay those repairs. You have adult witnesses who will swear that the car was acting up before your husband put gas in it. I would see how far they are going to push it then I would absolutely get legal representation if needed. I would much rather pay an attorney than pay for some bogus repair charges I didn't cause.

All that said, hopefully when the company gets the whole story they will realize the car had problems before you rented it and handle the situation accordingly. One can hope!

Sorry this happened to you. What an ugly shadow cast upon what I hope was an otherwise awesome vacation!

Thanks! Unfortunately, my 10-year old and I spent most of our vacation in the hotel room (other than the trip to San Juan) because she developed a serious ulcer (post-infectious gastritis) after having the stomach virus and was too uncomfortable to leave the room for extended periods of time. DH and teen had a great time with the family that came with us. Let's just say that this rental car dispute is just the cherry on top ;-(

It takes far LONGER to pay with cash, as you have to go inside. If you pay by credit card, you do so at the pump in most cases these days.

In Puerto Rico, you cannot pay at the pump. You MUST pay inside. Cash is quicker in PR, but they are required by law to provide you with a receipt for all transactions. They can get into big trouble if they do not provide you with a receipt, because that is the way the government receives the tax off the transaction. The receipt even enters you into a lottery.

I'm sure your husband received a receipt after paying cash. Find this receipt and you will prove *you* were not the party responsible for putting diesel into to the tank.

P.S. - the size of the diesel pump is exactly the same as in the US.

But does the receipt show what sort of gas he was going to pump? If he felt cash was quicker, I imagine he didn't go back inside to get a receipt showing exactly what he had pumped, so he might just have a receipt showing the money he gave them.
