Hi Guys!
Here's the question. I'm planning a trip Sept of 2008 with my DDs (22, 20, honorary DD 25,) and my folks (72, 63) and my Aunt (in her 60s) and me....(DH says traveling with that bunch would not be a vacation!) We are planning to get several rooms at either the Poly or the Yacht Club...and I can't decide. My Dad will be using a scooter (protesting all the way I'm sure) and so I was wanting a resort that would be convenient for getting around the world. We will be doing a couple of behind the scenes tours, having nice dinners most evenings, and lots of everyone doing their own thing. I've stayed at the Poly and loved it, but I've not stayed at the YC....do you have any thoughts on which might be a better choice for us?

PS The dole whips at the Poly's food court do factor in.....:teeth:

YC offers the convenience to Epcot and MGM -- you can walk to both -- or take the boats. Either option are easy to do.

Poly offers the monorail transportation to MK and then to Epcot.

There are tons of nice places to eat close to the YC because of Epcot -- probably more than the Poly. And, with the ages of your group, the BW at night offers some nice evening entertainment options. The slide at the YC would also probably be more attractive for those "older" youth, too, as the Poly slide is nice but not as long, etc. as that of SAB.

Some of it will depend on the theme you like best. We enjoy the YC -- although others do not. Some find it stuff --we didn't and we have a 9 yr old.

Keep in mind that the YC does not have a "Capt Cook's" that the Poly has -- which is something that is badly needed at the YC/BC (my DH thinks they should take the arcade out and put it there -- or expand Beaches and Creme and include a breakfast there -- anyways that is off topic). The marketplace at the BC is nice but doesn't offer the options you will find at Poly.

Also, I think the Poly was just refurbished and it has been awhile for the YC. In Sept and then again in Dec our rooms at the YC were fine -- very nice.

I'm not much help here. I think either option would work for you and I like both resorts. Can't go wrong with either.

I'm voting Yacht Club. At the Poly, you have to walk around outside to get to your room and sometimes you have to do it in the heat or the rain. At the YC, you can valet the car...pull right up to the door and walk in.

That's where I'd stay if I was picking a hotel (from those two) for my parents.

If I were picking for the girls, I'd go Poly. :)

Thanks guys! We won't have a car. We're flying in and not renting a car...everyone swears they won't ride with me and I sure won't ride with them!
Cool Beans...would you suggest a resort other than the Poly or YC?

If it were me, I'd go to the Grand Floridian and stay in the main building. It would be easy on my parents, have the monorail, be fun and relaxing for everyone. I DO generally prefer the Beach Club, Poly or AKL...but for the ease, I'd take my parents to the GF.

I really think the YC is the better place for older folks. But, they're your parents. You know them better than I do!

Good luck and have fun!!!!

Thanks! For whatever reason I hadn't even thought of the GF!

I love the AKL too but for this trip I thought the distance from everything would be harder for them.

It's 50/50 on transportation. The Monorail from the Poly is great for MK/TTC and Resort hopping but the walk to Epcot from the BC is great also. And easy to get to MGM using the launches near the Swan & Dolphin too. As for the Resorts, Just back from the Poly. Not one bit impressed. Choose the YC:confused3

to stay in the main building of the GF you have to be in concierge - a good deal more expensive than a regular room....

the GF is our favorite disney resort (number 2 is the WL - but that wouldn't be good for you given the access requirements)....

between the YC and Poly, I much prefer the YC, but that's such a personal preference sort of thing....they are very different resorts...

The Yacht Club is a completely self contained resort and has overall better amenities in my opinion over the Polynesian. While they're both great, having stayed at both I'd choose YC over Poly.

Happy planning!:)

My vote is for the YC. We saw numerous people with scooters while staying at the YC, the area is much more scooter "friendly" than the Poly. The boat dock in front of YC gives great access to both Epcot (with lots of dining options) and MGM.

Last summer, I stayed at the Poly w/my family of 4 (me, DW, DD12, DS9), and my mom (68) and her husband (71), who both have mobility issues (though no scooter). Citing mobility problems of 2 members of our party, we kindly requested 1st floor Rarotonga for its proximity to GCH, pools and bus stop. We got it! It was the perfect location...It was so close to everything, that it didn't matter at all that it was not "attached" to GCH. There were literally only 4 uncovered steps between GCH and Rarotonga.

However, we found that it was still very difficult to get to the World Showcase part of Epcot...we could walk to the TTC, but then had to make our way all the way through FW. (I had never realized that this was far, but when you're conscious of the comfort and happiness of others with limitations, it becomes very obvious.) The night we had an ADR at Rose 'n Crown, we actually took the boat to MK and caught a bus to the Beach Club and walked to International Gateway from there.

My mother told me later that "next time" she would like to spend more time at WS, and would prefer to stay at the BC/YC for that very reason.

My point is, examine where you will spend the majority of your time. If you plan to have several dinners in the Epcot area (boardwalk or WS), definitely stay at YC. If not, go with the theme you prefer. We love the Poly! (The rooms are slightly larger, and will allow more room for the scooter.) We spend lots of time at the Jersey Shore, so that BC/YC theme is not original to us.

HTH!

wasabi girl...
I was wondering how many days you are going and what parks do you think you will spend most of your time at?

Also, with three individuals in their 60's and 70's do you perceive they will most likely break off from the main group to take it easy during the middle of the day or early evening? Do you know what their interest are if their not in the parks?

That is what I was going to say too (not in those exact words).

What parks do you spend the majority of your time at? That would factor in on the decision.

I have only stayed at the BC when it first opened so that was many moons ago (the BW was in the beginning phases but had not broken ground yet).

But I do love the Poly but we mainly go to MK & Epcot so we like the ease of the monorail or boat.

Hmmm....I'm not sure exactly where we will spend time. It is my Dad's first onsite stay ever (and first visit since Epcot opened in '81 or '82), my Aunt's first time to WDW. We are doing the "Keys to the Kingdom" tour and either the Undiscovered Future World Tour or one of the Animal Kingdom tours.

On past trips we've ended up spending our time at Animal Kingdom and Epcot...Maybe YC would be better since it is so centrally located.

I'll just ask the folks, I think they'd love the tackiness of the Poly...

Thanks!!

Well, i haven't stayed at the poly yet, we go in November.

But, we stayed YC concierge last year, and it was really really nice! I think the hotel is beautiful and it is a very luxurious grown up atmosphere. Rich wood and nautical decor... Has great food, YC Steakhouse..
Also, very convienent to Epcot and the boardwalk. If you FIL will be using a scooter, he could easily just "scoot" over to Epcot from the YC.. or go for a stroll around the boardwalk in a big circle..
I especially love it at night... we were lucky enough to have a lake view room, and the atmosphere at night was simply magical!! Everything is all lit up at the boardwalk, and you can hear/see Epcot's fireworks too..
Ask me how i know, well.. we all got really sick (stomach bug) and were "stuck"in our room for 3 days straight.. :( But, let me tell ya, if i had to be stuck someplace..... LOL This was a great place!
