The problem with free dining, is you have to book it with a package. As a florida resident, they'll have an easier time getting a cheap room at a value and paying OOP for dining at quick service locations.

For tickets, there's a few options.
The dream 4 pass - 4 days for 99$, but it has to be used by 5/25. So unless they plan on going now, it won't help them much.
Play 3 pass - 99$ as well (i think). 3 days that can be used within 6 months. 1 park per day. So you're only talking about 15$ or so for each person for 3 days.
weekday annual pass - If they'd really like to visit disney for a bit longer, this pass is only 165$ per adult (so about 80$) to upgrade. It is a 1yr annual pass, but block out dates like the seasonal. So no summer, no Christmas/new years, no thanksgiving, and no spring break. As well, no weekends. It's great for adults, but it's block outs generaly coinside with school breaks. But having the annual pass will give them some better discounts, like at planet hollywood, rainforest cafe, world showcase in epcot. And as well as resort discounts (usually 35-40%, might be more if they're offering these discounts to the general public). And there's merchandise discount at DTD. As well as having an annual pass they can add the dining to the room without making it a package, but I don't know if this applies to free dining.

When we were poor and going to Disney...
We'd buy play 4 passes at the beginning of summer... just go for one day trips. At the end of summer upgrade to seasonal passes. Prices have gone up since then, but it was generally 125$ each time which really made it easier to afford. Plus having the play 4, we could go during the summer when seasonals were blocked out.
We'd stay at a cheap hotel along 192 using the travel saver book, eventually we moved to the campgrounds at Ft Wilderness for about 30$ a night (with AAA, Fl resident, or AP discount).

As florida residents, they have a lot of things to play in their advantage to make it a really affordable trip, since most florida residents don't go with MYW tickets (which eat up a big chunk of the budget).

ETA: just read about their love for camping. The fort is a great place to be, and makes disney even more affordable. You'll find most campers at the fort only spend 50% or less of their time at the parks. There's just something about being there, and so many things to do. Yes trail's end is still the cheapest buffet on property (17$ for lunch and 22$ for dinner, the last I checked). They also sell large cheese pizzas for like 13-14$, and so yummy.
A couple things, if they plan on going during summer time, hooking up a window AC unit to a tent is a major major benefit. As well as bringing along a mini fridge for having breakfast and snacks handy.
Truthfully if they got the play 3 pass, they could make three trips to the fort. Come in friday, leave sunday, and just spend saturday in the park.

I would not totally nix the idea of staying offsite. Even with the $14 parking you can find motels easily that would come in under what a value would run. We did it for years. Also if they are staying offsite I would suggest a meal or two outside of Disney. The whole family could eat at a Waffle House for less than 1 persons dinner inside of Disney.

If they have never been to Disney I think spending the 4 days in the parks will more than take up their whole time, not sure why they need extra things? Aren't those things more for when you are there for 2 weeks? It will take them every minute of 4 days to even touch the surface of all the rides and shows. Seriously I would just give them good tips about doing things inside the park.

No I do not think it is a bit off. Those who cannot afford clothing or school supplies nor have a small emergency fund really should just go for the day or night if that is what they have and be proud of it. Keeping up with the Joneses or living beyond ones means is nonsense. The question is without the one day ticket would they be contemplating vacationing at DW. If it is just the one day ticket that is drawing them into this vacation then they should just go for the day. The other way of thinking can be a FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE. One does not spend more just to cash in on something worth less. This again can be bring about a financial crisis and if they were my friends and I knew that they lived paycheck to paycheck or could not buy school supplies than I personally would be encouraging them wiser ways to put that money.

The question was what other free things are at Disney. Not whether you think the family should or should not go on vacation. You have no clue how this family is or is not going on this trip or where the money is coming from. Why not just stick with what the OP asked? I don't believe it had anything to do with your opinion of the families financial picture.

If they stay for several days then the free day isn't really worth much because as you add extra days the price goes down substantially. It might only cost $2 or $3 per person to add an extra day once you get to the 5th day. If you have a 3 day ticket and want to add a 4th day, it's only like $5 more.

Disney will not count the free one day ticket as "day 1." Your friends would still have to purchase the 1 day ticket at the regular price if they stay longer than one day.

I hope what I'm saying makes sense. In other words, if they are going to stay for several days, their free one day ticket would only be worth a couple of bucks if you look at how the ticket prices work.

This is incorrect.

This makes sense to me!

If you use a "Give a Day" ticket, it is treated as a 1 day ticket of an 80$ value. So it's still considered the first day.

But like I stated before, most floridians DON'T use MYW tickets because florida resident tickets are marketed differently, and much cheaper.

We get the play 3 pass for 100$ and can be used with a 6month time frame. Why would we go with a MYW 3 day base ticket for like twice the price and used in 14 days?

This makes sense to me!
:)

My kids had never been before either, but we really appreciated the movie on the beach and the karaoke they had at the pool. We spent most of the day in the parks but it was hot and tiring doing all that walking and dealing with all the people. Sometimes the best thing about the free stuff like the campfires is they are low-key and don't have the crowds to navigate (like the fireworks), but they are still something different than what you'd do at home and very definitely fun. Also, if they leave the parks for a nap or go to dinner somewhere outside the parks or... they may not want to go back in to the park to get their afternoon or evening's entertainment.:goodvibes

I think it is great that you are helping them plan a vacation. It amazes me how some people judge when they have no idea the circumstances.

nice call livie....

I guess people that aren't fl residents don't get how cheap it is for us to go. And I think you're friends will have a great time, whether it's one day or five days.

it IS alot cheaper for FL resi to go to wdw then most people...we get alot of deals and it does not cost alot to drive from here.It takes me 45.00 there AND back TOTAL for gas to drive to wdw.I can stay at the values for 64-69.00 a night and sometimes cheaper with AP discount or fl resi discount and I get seasonal APs cheaper then reg ones and use on more then one trip.We get tons of 40% pin codes...

I think Sandra gave good advice. If they can go in the near future, upgrade the 1 day GAD pass to the $99 4-day pass for about $26. This is the best deal on tickets that Disney has had in about 10 years. It's what we plan to do. The free dining, while a good deal sometimes, is probably not the best deal for Florida residents with a free 1-day ticket since you do have to purchase an additional one-day ticket. They will effectively negate the value of their free ticket, plus having to pay rack rate for the hotel room.

We will do two 1-night weekend trips to use the 4-day tix. Maybe they can do something like that, spread the Disney discovery over time, and save on hotel costs.

hi Livie!!! I think that what you are doing is wonderful!!!:thumbsup2, I don't have any free ideas, but If you could tell me where they are staying or what, Our family would love to send them a grab bah or gift card to assist with somethings while they are there! If they are interested. Here's for more pixiedust: coming your way!:flower3:

Livie you are a great friend!!!! I agree with a previous post about the mousesavers site. We are in Tally and go to Disney every chance we get! How lucky are we to be Fl. residents! hehe Neighbors think we are nuts but oh well!

we are closer neighbors then you think!!;):cheer2:

Not ticket related, but still budget friendly- Tell them not to buy bottled water in the parks! They can go to any counter service location and get ice water for free! Also I don't know if you posted what age their kids are or not, but pin trading is a great activity in and out of the park, and you can cruise ebay and get some good deals on lots of pins and then take them to the park and trade 'em for ones you do want! My 10 year old nephew just LOVED doing this on our last trip!

OP, how very nice of you not to pass judgement on them and want to try to help them. To those other posters passing judgement...STOP! These people could be working their butts off and just can't get ahead. Even they are entitled to a little fun. Life is too short!! As for free things, my kids love finding hidden Mickey's. There is also the Kim Possible missions at Epcot. Also at Epcot are the kidcot stops. They make a mask and when you have been to all stops you go to guest services and they will give you a "prize". Usually a pin or poster or something like that. I hope they have a great time.

THANKS! ...some people are just not worth responding to:sad2: I dont care to much that they do not have alot of money...its not my job to tell them NOT to take their kids on vacation. Its not like they are poor and go every year and could be putting that money other places..they have NEVER been to wdw or anywhere else for that matter. They work and pay bills but I guess just can not get where most would like to be.They are what some would say poor (I wouldnt label them as that) BUT at least they are trying so if they need advice I will help them out.
I hope they can go and have fun...those kids would love it.Its always nice when someone with NO good imput at all feels they need to tell others what they should do. people feel they can hide behind a computer and be rude and its ok...
I DO give them school supplies and clothes, why? because I can ...I like to help out...they have stuff but not all the extras, it feels good to help others (not just yourself) I am sure they can do without my extra pencils and paper but they always say thank you and I am sure it helps.
