So my family (original family, lol, plus me and DH) is going to California in about a month. Unusually, we are not going to Disneyland, etc. at all (they all went last year - too expensive, and DH and I went several months ago). We are going to be in San Diego the last few days, but probably up in the Hollywood area the first few days (relatives are there and we want to drop in). We are considering Universal Studios, but the fact that we could only go on a Saturday (huge crowds?) and the average temperatures (almost 90º? - we're from AZ, but that doesn't make for a nice day) are scaring me. None of my family has been to Universal (I went 6 years ago on Senior trip and we had a BLAST - but it was in March - not crowded, not hot). Do you think this is even worth trying, or will our experience turn everyone off forever? (that happened to my dad with Sea World one year - it was hot and miserable and he refuses to ever go back...sigh). I am also going to be 7 months pregnant, so the heat figures in there.
Please, any honest comment/suggestions about crowd sizes on Saturdays in July and on the heat?

You can purchase express passes at Universal Hollywood. That would save you from the heat. We used them two years ago. At that time what they did was give you a lanyard with the pass that you wore around your neck and it allowed you unlimited entry to the express line.

We enjoyed the park.
