Ok guys I almost logged on with a new user I'm so embarrassed but I forgot this stuff!--forgot the rules

10d3 with 3 being an exponent and d equaling 1

in other words 10d to the third power

please help me i'm tired

thanks

A power just means the number multiplied by itself that many times.

So 10d to the third power would be 10d x 10d x 10d, so 1000(d^3). The carat symbol means exponent.

Hope that helps.

Kimya

If its 10d to the 3 power than its

1000 * d^3 as the answer

If you are trying to figure out the order to do the operation you do exponents, then multiplication

d3 with d=1 would be 1 then times 10=10

Is that what you are asking? :teacher:

Kimya,

Thanks for reponding so quickly. I thought that 10d^3 with d being = 1 one would be like this:

10(1)^3 which equals
10(1) which equals
10

in other words the only number that the exponent applies to is the number directly below it---d in this case - which is represented by 1

am i making any damn sense?...jeez...shoot me now

thanks

Oops, I missed the part where you said d = 1. In that case, yes, you are correct.

ok..here is another one..just to be sure i got the order right

3a^2 where a = 3

translates to 3(3)^3 which =
3(27)=
81

am i doing this right..jeez

I believe that example would be 27.

If 3a^2 where a = 3, then it would be 3(3^2), which would be 3(9), which would be 27. I think you accidentally changed your exponent to 3 (or made a typo in the original equation, in which case, if it really was 3, then 81 is correct).

your the best! (all of you!) If you were here i'd buy you all a drink :woohoo: or whatever!!..lol

thanks again!

Mary

Remember with exponents to ask yourself "Is it (10d)^3 or 10d^3?"

Big difference. :)

3a^2 is really 3(a^2). So if a=3, then it is
3(3^2)
3(9)
27.

If it were (3a)^2, where a=3, then it is:
3a x 3a
3(3) x 3(3)
9 x 9
81

Gotta love exponents! :)
