I've just listed my first few items for sale on ebay. I am confused about Paypal, though. I have a personal paypal account because I have been a buyer on ebay for several years. As a seller, though, do I have to upgrade to a premier or business account? If someone pays with a credit card using paypal, it seems like I need a premier/business account to receive payment. I don't really want to do that, because it seems like there are more fees involved, but I will if it is necessary.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, if you accept PayPal, you have to accept all forms of payment including credit cards. This is a recent change.

I asked the same question not too long ago.

Yes, you will have to upgrade your account if you take Paypal. It doesn't cost you anything to upgrade your account, but they do take a small fee out of each payment, regardless if it is paid with a credit card or comes from someone's bank account.

If you are just getting started with PayPal, feel free to put a notation in your eBay listing: "There may be a delay in shipping for PayPal buyers as I am just learning how to use PayPal".

You have a right to verify that the payment has been completed (not just pending) before you ship. If you have to modify your PayPal account (such as make it premier) to get the payment completed, that may consume a few days too.

Thanks for your responses. As a buyer, I always like paying with Paypal because it is so easy. I didn't realize the sellers were paying a fee. Bummer. :guilty:

Sellers only pay a fee when a buyer pays via credit card. I think it's legit not to include Paypal in your listing but after an aution is over to let the high bidder know you can accept Paypal but only direct transfers - no credit cards. I think as long as you don't advertise you accept Paypal on your listing you can still offer it after the fact like this so you don't have to upgrade your Paypal account.

Once credit cards are accepted, sellers pay a fee REGARDLESS of the method of payment a buyer uses. The seller pays the same fee if someone pays with VISA or transfers funds from a PP account.

I didn't realize this had changed, thanks for the heads up. I never used to pay a fee except for credit card payments when I had a business account which is why I got rid of it.

This is against Paypal new Rules changed in August 2005. Any seller/person who takes Paypal whether advertised or not, must accept credit cards.

Ebay's policy states:

Sellers who offer PayPal as a payment option on eBay (either using logos or text in the item description) must accept all forms of PayPal payment including account balance, bank account transfer, and credit cards as per eBay’s PayPal Payments policy.

So, as I understand it according to ebay's wording, a seller is only required to accept credit cards if Paypal is listed as a payment option in the auction. If a seller makes no mention of accepting Paypal in the auction description, I still believe an electronic funds transfer through Paypal may be offered to the high bidder as an alternative to sending a check/money order/whatever.

I wish I had known this. I have gotten myself into quite a pickle because of this.

in order to take credit cards through paypal you will have to set up a premier account the donwside is you then have to start paying fees we have found that it is much easier to pay the fees if you sell alot then people paying with credit cards and then not being able to accept hope this helps
