HELP: Need Info From Contact Wearers

Yeah, a lot of people do not adapt. I'd say its closer to 50/50 but it's worth a shot.

One thing you could also do is ask for Rx's for both distance AND mono. When you wear distance, you can wear reading glasses over the top when needed. Or you can go mono for the day. That way you have more flexability.

Depth perception will definately be off, no questions. But you can adapt to that, just like people who are blind in one eye will adapt. Just don't try to watch a 3D movie with monovision CLs in. :)

I've been wearing monovision for over a year now. I have to tell you that it's the best thing to happen to me in years.

I was having a lot of issues with my left lens...redness, pain, itching. It made wearing the lens incredibly difficult, to the point that I ended up not wearing my lenses for about a year. Went to different doctors (opthamologists) and none could figure out what to do...tried multi-focal lenses, single vision lenses, different brands, etc. and nothing helped. One tried to get me to use Restasis for a dry eye condition.

Finally found someone new, and the first thing she says after checking and examining the eyes was...have you thought about mono vision? I am right eye dominant and that eye is adjusted for distance, while I don't wear a lens in the left eye, which adjusts for reading. It took a bit of time (not anywhere as long as I thought) for my brain to figure out it, but once it did, I was gold.

I find that there are some distances that are a bit less perfect than others (mostly the distance from my sofa to the TV) so sometimes I'll just take the lens out and wear my glasses. At night I have had some minor issues with headlight halos because the right eye is managing the distance, so the lights are not as clear through the left, but the brain seems to handle it appropriately.

The best part...no pain or redness in the left eye anymore. I'm very happy.

We tried a few different single lenses before we settled on one. I also have a box of left lenses, in case I was doing a long distance drive and wanted perfect clarity. But I rarely need to put a lens in the left.

Do you all feel uncomfortable NOT getting your contacts from your eye doctor?

I recently got new contacts. I have an issue w/ my eye that needs to be monitored regularly, so no big box stores for me. I have a complicated prescription, so the contacts were expensive. I ended up using her instead of looking on line for something cheaper. I just felt weird having her do all the work and then just taking the prescription elsewhere.

Is this silly? Are the eye doctors ok w/ this practice?

No, not really but they have no choice. And they will always be nice about it to not tick off their patients. Complicated prescriptions like gas permeable contacts are usually only bought at the doctor's office. Boxed disposables are often bought elsewhere. I've never really looked at prices though and always wondered if they were really THAT much cheaper. I think it's nice to support your optometrists office. Fincancially nowadays when people can buy contacts and glasses anywhere, the private practices are not doing so well.

My eye doctor now just orders through 1800Contacts at the same price I can order them online. Thus, I ordered somewhere else for half the cost.

I know a couple people who wear one contact. I know I am probably crazy, but I couldn't wear one contact. It would throw off my whole sense of symmetry. I know that nobody else would notice, but I would know it. I have to go both, and if I am ever told I only need one, I will have to keep wearing two.

I guess it is OCD or something.

Day 4 and this is exactly what I am noticing. I am right eye dominate which has 20/20 vision for distance but with the lens in the left eye, it made the headlight halos which kind of drove me crazy. I also have less than perfect clarity at the TV watching distance with the left lens in. At this point I am seriously wondering if it wasn't just easier to grab my cheaters every time I need to read something!! I don't want to give up on it though. After all, it's only been 4 days.

The BIGGEST struggle I am having is telling if the dang lens is inside out or not! There is such a suble difference when I look at it both ways that it's hard to tell!! Does it look like a cup or a bowl?? Well heck, it looks like a bowl both ways! Folds like a taco both ways! Trying hard not to let frustration set in, but at this point, I don't ever see myself loving the single lens solution. :sad1: Not ready to give up though.

Ah yes, hate the "fold like a taco" thing, LOL. My old contacts always did that. These new ones are a bit stiffer.

All the contacts I have ever worn had numbers printed on them around the edge. When on my finger, if the numbers were backwards, I knew I was putting them in the correct way.

My contacts are for astigmatism though, not sure if numbers are visible on all contacts, they just were on all the contacts I've ever used.
