There was some lettuce in the crisper that went bad. I'm not going to lie to you...it happens often around my house. But it's usually not this bad.

The offending lettuce was removed and thrown away. I washed out the crispers, underneath the crispers, the shelves, and the walls of the fridge. It still stunk. Not only that, but the ice tastes like lettuce. I've thrown out the whole bin of ice three times.

The smell was still there yesterday (this is going on 5 days now), and I put baking soda in both the fridge AND the freezer. It's still bad.

Help me. What else should I do? Is there something that neutralizes lettuce?

**Oct 8th OK, it seems to not be getting any better. I've had baking soda in the fridge and the freezer for all this time. I'm not above putting a candle in the thing, but I would have thought that if it was bad lettuce it would have faded away by now. I'm headed to empty the fridge and freezer and scrub them down, but I have no thoughts that the smell will go away. Anyone else that can help?

I have no idea! I would try re-washing it again, but this time I would get a clean cloth some hot water, and add the baking soda right in the hot water! Hey it's worth a try. :confused3

Sorry, can't help you with the smell.

We call our crisper "the rot drawer." We have great intentions of using fresh veggies and fruits. But time goes by, and something starts stinking. We know it's time to clean (and then re-fill) the rot drawer.

Good luck.

A good scrubing with plain vinegar.

All else fails.... a tablespoon of bleach and warm water (like a quart).

check out the other stuff there, you never know you else you might find. My fridge was really smelling bad one time. We cleaned out all the inside and still it was rank.
Well I finally located the problem. We had a carton of eggs and one had gone bad. Really, really bad :crazy2: Once we tossed out the carton the fridge went back to smelling okay.

hmmm...a bad egg? there's a thought.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Go check the eggs, when you get back we'll have other ideas!

I second the vinegar cure. Try putting an open jar or bowl of vinegar in and leaving it overnight or longer.

"Windex fixes everything" No
Im just joking. Maybe get clean it with viniger than put a car scent thing in there

Try filling the drawer with some crinkled up newspapers and change them each day until the smell is gone. Or put an opened box of baking soda in the drawer. Or both at the same time.

Good luck!!
