we leave on the 20th and I don't know what to do to get my DS to use ANY PUBLIC BATHROOMS!!!!!

He is SOOO afraid of the auto-flush that he screams and cries-

As gross and disgusting as this sounds.... we always carry an empty water bottle for times like this (when we are out)- however we will be gone for 7 days and can't bring 100 water bottles!!

HELP!!

you cant do anything about the other peoples toilets, but carry post its with you and cover the sensor while you go.

to be honest i didnt find them to be that loud at disney.

When we checked in at the ticket booth to exchange our paper tickets for admission cards, the cast member automatically handed us a large Mickey head sticker to put over the sensors. I hadn't thought of this before Disney, and now I carry large stickers in my purse all the time.

Take this idea for a test drive at your local Target store.
It will give DS some confidence that may lessen your battle in the parks.

DD hates the loud sound too,
our rule is that she exits the stall and covers her ears, says ok, I flush and then I come out and tap her on the shoulder when the loudest part is past.

We got lots of knowing smiles from women in the bathroom
(been there, done that)

At 6 1/2 She is braver now,
she still loves to see a manual flush handle,
but it meant a lot to her that I didn't override her fears as silly.

Have a wonderful trip!

ps. edited to add: In a pinch you can put your hand just in front of the sensor to keep it from flushing.

DD was terrified of public bathroom stalls when we went to Hershey a few years ago, I took her portable potty it was the kind that uses gallon freezer bags and just carried it around in the bottom of the stroller and set it up in bathroom by the sinks. Got a few strange looks but it worked for us.

We used post its to cover the sensor when DS was little also! I reminded him every time it was "Mickey Magic toliets". After a few trips he didn't want the post its anymore & wanted the magic toliets to work right! LOL

Even now when we are out & he sees the auto flushers, he says "Look Mommy! It is Mickey Magic!" He thinks it is great Mickey shares his magic with the movie theater, mall, etc.

You can use the baby care centers sometimes but honestly your going to have to try and help him find a way to ease his fears. I used the post it notes and once my kids were sure they would work they were ok - I also let them leave the stall while I flushed.

Depending on how old he is you can explain how the toilet works as well as find out what exactly he is afraid of. Once you know the fear you can address it - is he afraid of getting wet? getting flushed? the noise? etc.

I would take him to an uncrowded place with auto flush toilets - on a potty field trip LOL :) Make sure he dosen't have to go and show him how the toilets work - how the post it will work and ask him what he would like you to do.

Personally I would proably try a little "incentive" maybe a favorite treat anytime he tries a public toilet !
Good luck -

TJ

Oh how I feel your pain!

We just went through this with our DD3. Or should I say we are going through this with our DD3. What began as a simple sound issue morphed into a crazy fear of any toilet outside of a home environment. We tried to cover the electric flusher with a post-it-note - no dice. I can't tell you how aweful her hysterics were. I'm certain that while trying to get her to use the potty before a long flight out of Newark I had moms peering in to see if I was abusing her. It was aweful. It has subsided a little, but not enough to let me off the hook.

I will tell you the two things we have done, as absurd as they sound, in case you have your back against a wall. First, we bought her children's rifle earmuffs. You know those headsets hunters or shooters wear to protect their hearing from the shot? Well, who knew they made children's versions! We got some for like $6 at our local sporting goods store. She looks ridiculous, but it muffles loud noises enough that we can enjoy events without her freaking out, or walking around with her hands over her ears all day. We recently took her into NYC for a Yankee game, and she literally wore them from the moment we stepped onto the street until we got back in the car at the end of the day. (I never really realized how loud the city was. (Buses, horns, the subway, crazed baseball fans, etc.) If sound is really the issue, you might try that. (It also helps with fireworks, parades, airports, etc.) I can't tell you the number of weird looks we get from people when we're out in public. But most people get a good chuckle out of it - especially when we tell them she hates loud noises. It doesn't seem to bother her at all - and it frees her up to enjoy the world around her - albeit it at a lower decible level.

The other thing that we ended up doing was carrying some GoodNite pullups with us. I literally take her into the stall, take off her underwear, put on the pullup, she does her thing (never #2!), we take the pullup off and put her underwear back on. Then we simply toss the offending pullup in the garbage. I know it sounds ridiculous, but she just wouldn't budge. It has saved us a lot of grief - and has simplified our life for the moment. She just started preschool, and I was really worried about it - but she has gone two days and used the potty both days. With any luck she'll outgrow this completely soon.

Do hang in there. I know exactly how you feel - what a pain, right?! I mean, you get all excited because diapers and pullups are behind you, and then you have to take this huge step back.

I hope your DS will respond to the post-it-notes. But if you're in a jam you might try our crazy method - it just might work. :-)

Good luck!

Thanks for your answers...

WRIGHTER: I am going to try your ideas!! I will head to Dicks Sporting Goods this weekend...

I am at a loss- we have tried everything...

He is 3 and when I tell him Mickey wants him to use his potty's- he says that he wants to come home to use the potty.

he is in pre-school too and will not use the bathrooms there- he HOLDS it for 3 hours everyday. Poor guy!

Thanks and I will make sure that I post about the potty experience when we return!

Jen

WELL, we've been in your exact position & I can relate. My dd was o.k. on our visit to Disney when she was 3, but for some reason developed the fear of the AF on our following trip, at 4. She flat-out refused to go. We had to leave Epcot on our first day and go back to the Polynesian for her to use the toilet

Then on day 2 we discovered the baby care center & it's Manual flush toilet. So we spent the remainder of the trip running her back to said toilet every hour! And her bladder is the size of a walnut apparently. I guess running cross-park beats running back to the hotel!

Well I'm happy to report that on our past trip (5 now) she has graduated to tolerating the Automatic Flush :woohoo:

I think we should all write to guest relations and request more manual flushing toilets to be installed around the parks. this is a wide-spread problem/fear for many kids and we shouldn't have to deal with it for the amt. of $$ we shell out to the mouse.

Good luck to you guys!!

I just cover up the sensor with my hand for dd5 (ds5 is fine with it). She will not go unless I do this.

I always warn my DD4 that it's an automatic flush ahead of time. She gets scared too and jumps off the toilet as soon as she hears its. Poor thing, she's so short they don't always "sense" she's still there and flush mid-stream!

I have also covered the sensor w/ my hand or purse.

HELP!!

OMG - this was our trip in 2005! DD was 4 (yes 4!) at the time and she was *terrified* of public restrooms (she got scared by a super-loud, super-suctioning auto-flush toilet at Wal-Mart - it flushed even though I covered the sensor). This was more than a fear - I believe it was a full-on phobia for awhile. She even regressed at home and wanted to go back to her potty chair and wouldn't flush the regular toilet.

So, here's what we did. We always *tried* to get her to use the regular potty, and sometimes she did (crying the entire time). Akin to the water bottle thing, we carried the "pot" part of her potty chair in a bag. When we went to the restroom, I'd hold the pot part underneath her so she could go. I know, it sounds gross - but I had to do what I had to do.

On the upside, not long after we got home, she was OK again - I guess just going IN to the public restrooms showed her they weren't all scary.

And Wrighter - great idea about the Pull-Ups - wish we would have thought of it!

ajh88 - Laughed when I read your post about toting around that piece of the potty. We did a very similar thing with our DS when he had a similar phobia. We toted around the seat insert of the little potty in a bag! It was ridiculous - it went everywhere with us. But it was small enough to stash under the stroller, so it wasn't too bad. But MAN was I happy when I was done with that!

DDs phobia is quite different - she won't go near the toilet, let alone sit on it. Hence the pullups. :-)

You're right - ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :-)

Hey Jen,
I loved, loved, loved my DD's preschool teacher.
Maybe yours can be a helper here.
would he/she be willing to help DS with flushing after he leaves the potty?
and praise him on his bravery.
Teacher praise is worth its weight in gold around here.

The encouraging words of her fellow students helped DD succeed in
many of her preschool challenges.
I remember the money bars in particular.
"you can do it" her friends would cheer.
She was so proud when she did it All By Herself.
There was much rejoicing
:dance3:

To be honest the potty flush / sound thing
was just something she had to be ready to deal with.
It may have something to do with the shape of the ear canal.
The vibrations just bother them until they grow to where the vibrations are not so bothersome.

this too shall pass,
it just feels like forever
