DD is having her 13th birthday party next week. We are having cake, mexican dip, and other snacks, but not a meal. How can I word that? I don't want the kids to come without eating dinner and be hungry. She has just invited too many to feed them all dinner. Thanks!!

At the bottom of the invite, I'd just write "snacks and cake to be served". I don't know if 13 yo's would understand "appetisers or horderves". ;)

DD just had her 10th bday party. This year on the invites instead of putting RSVP, I put please reply ASAP and got a much better response than last year. Just a thought!

This made me LOL. I agree that 'snacks and cake' are a good phrasing to use.

What time is the party? Is it during a traditional meal time? If I was being invited to a party that was from 5-9, I would expect to be fed something substantial (heavy appetizers would be fine). If it was not a traditional meal time, I would not expect a meal. The suggestions above for wording are good ones.

The party is from 7-10 pm.

It's good you want to clarify. Some people eat that late.

DD6 just went to a birthday party last Saturday that was from 12-3. We assumed they were serving lunch. They did not. All they had was cake and some chips and dip. DD was starving when she got home. We'd have been glad to feed her lunch early if we'd known (we usually eat at 12:30). I didn't think to ask when I RSVP'd. Your idea of putting "snacks and cake" would have made it clear.

Laurie :)

Hmmm from 7 til 10 I think I'd expect a meal unless told otherwise, so I guess use some phrasing from those suggested above. Are you sure you couldn't manage a few pizzas? Maybe that'd be an affordable alternative.

Yes, I guess I could afford pizzas, even though it would take a lot of them to feed over thirty middle school kids and ten adult chaperones, but I've served pizza at one of her pool party's before and it was a mess. The kids were eating it in the pool. It's at my in-laws house, and I don't want a big mess.

Dont worry about getting pizza or supper. Whenever I had pool partys as a teen they never ate much. Snacks and birthday cake sounds like a good wording.

Wow! More than 30 IS an awful lot! Plus chaperones! I thought it was a bit smaller! I guess I would just go for the snacks and cake for that crowd! Hope it's a great party!

As a parent I would not assume a meal was being served unless the party was located a pizza place or McDonalds (or the like). Otherwise I would just assume there would be a cake or ice cream (or both). But I have never assumed a meal.

I would just put snacks and cake will be served, if you felt it necessary.

I agree. I never expect a 'meal' at a birthday party, even if it does fall during a meal time unless its stated as a cookout or somethign similar.. It's a birthday party, not a dinner party.

I do expect a meal if a party is during meal times and do not expect a meal if the party is not during normal meal hours, but it is nice to spell it out on the invitation. Snacks and cake is good wording and will make it clear. Strange to have a noon party and not have any food other than chips and cake, without making it clear on the invitation. My son went to an afternoon party recently and they had pizza. I'd fed him first since and he wasn't hungry--if I had of known I wouldn't have fed him before.
