I will be a new owner of small BLT contract, but need help understanding the rental opportunity. When someone rents those from me, do they (or I) need to create a whole new reservation with those points or can they just add it to existing/planned reservation?

Creating a whole new reservation isn't ideal because it severely limits the options. If they can add to their existing lot of points to then create their own reservation, that makes a lot more sense.

Bottom line, is there a market for renting 25-50 points or do I run a high risk of points going to waste?

Unless you transfer your points to another Member, your only option for rental is to make a reservation using your points for the other party. Non DVC Members cannot do anything with DVC points as they are not able to access the DVC Reservation system. There are ways to link a reservation made by you to another Member's reservation but not as easy to link to a reservation made by a non-Member.

Making a reservation for someone else IS ideal since you will control the reservation (and thus your points) until they check-in at the resort. If your renter fails to make payment, you have the ability to recoup your points and rent to someone else.

Transferring to another DVC Member is also ideal since they will control the points once transferred into their account (and can even bank them for an additional year of use). Transferring is an irreversible transaction and cannot be undone once completed, to both parties should consider that when participating in a transfer.

Good luck with your decision!

So I have been a rentee (pre-DVC) and renter (after DVC purchase). Like Doc said above, there are two main methods:

1) Transfer points to their account. They need to be a DVC member. And the points cannot already be banked (they can bank it when its gets transferred). Then they are in charge of making the reservation and it shows up in their account. It won't show up in your account. You can only do one transfer per year. And you need to get full payment in advance, because once you transfer, they are gone.

2) Make a rental reservation for someone directly. This can be for DVC members or non-DVC members. You can use any of your points. It will show up in your account, not theirs (even if they are a DVC member). You have full control over it and can cancel if needed. Some people/places will still want full payment up front, but you can also get partial payment, since you still have control over it.

I have only done Option 2, as I was renting out banked points, and the times I rented points I wasn't a DVC member yet.

You cannot transfer borrowed points either. And you cannot borrow transferred points.
