Help me plan surprise trip to NYC

Thanks for posting this and for the replies. We are in the first stages of planning a new years eve trip to NY. First trip to NY for me and dh.. We have our hotel but that is it so far.

Adding a recommendation to the NY city pass. We saw loads with this & it only cost me $112 as I got a discount at the time for a 3 day pass

I appreciate all the advice! I really think my DH will flip (in a good way) if I can pull off this surprise! However he has been keeping us on a strict budget to pay off our mortgage and save for kids' college, retirement, etc. But doesn't everyone need one big surprise in life? :confused3

Hi
As far as hotels, check travelzoo and the NYC lodging specials.
You could bid on a 4Star through Priceline. www.betterbidding.com or www.biddingfortravel.com are two sites with good info on priceline.

Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park (the museum is suggested donation)
Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock (do this and skip the Empire State Bldg) then walk around Times Square....possibly see a show
Take the Subway to Brooklyn and walk the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan then take the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty
Walk around Chinatown, Soho, and Little Italy
Lower East Side Tenemant Museum
5th ave, the Library, and Bryant Park

www.broadwaybox.com for theater discounts
www.hopstop.com for walking and/or subway directions
www.menupages.com for restaurants by area
There is a ton of GREAT advice on the Trip Advisor New York City Forum!!!

Wow, I think your itinerary looks great. Just don't forget about all the great food. Op make sure you eat in all those neighborhoods,oh and add a deli love Carnegie.

I suggest NYCgo.com to help see what's available the weekend you'll be here also TONY.com can be a good resource for up to the minute stuff, reviews, etc.....I consult both of these and I am a lifetime New Yorker!!!

Also, you say your husband has always wanted to come here....Why?...the answer to that should help guide what you do here.

What I think makes NY unique is that it is a walking city with people from everywhere comingling, in some ways very much like a small town because people are not living isolated, just jumping out of their cars. Make sure you take time to sit at an outdoor cafe and watch life! Lincoln Center has a "Lincoln Center out of doors" Festival around this time of year, with outdoor am (and some pm) performances for free!

If you have any specific questions or need help with something, pm me.

I usually use Hotwire for NYC hotels-
The location is very important for late night, etc.
If you fly into Newark, the train is very convenient to Manhattan.
Also, I love Top of the Rock, the Public Library, the Roosevelt Island Tram, and the Shake Shack. (Great beer and burgers)
Have a great trip!

I know it's not really budget friendly but Jersey Boys is incredible and totally worth the $$.

Just the kind of information I need! Thanks! :goodvibes
