Hi Everybody, going to DL for the first time next weekend. Weather looks like high of 80s the week we are there. My question is about what is good park wear. I'd like to wear dresses, are they practical for DL? Dresses seem cooler tempwise than jeans and I'm too old for shorts (trust me). Just curious if I will regret packing a bunch of dresses, what do you all wear and what do you see there?

thanks in advance!

i would never EVER in a million years wear dresses to a park all day..uh uh no way forget it...i agree with you on the jeans but not necessarily the shorts..bermuda shorts, cargo shorts, are fine for any age...i dont think anybody over the age of 16 should wear booty shorts but ones that come down a couple inches above your knees are perfectly fine...i dont recommend the dresses unless either you wear shorts under them and recognize that its going to be a pain or dont go on many rides (getting in and out of some rides might not be so graceful...and whatever you do...dont wear heels or sandals all day...your feet will thank you in the end

I like wearing dresses a lot too, but I opt for capris or jeans at DL. My two older kids are obsessed with Splash Mountain, and that ride has you straddle the seat. I would feel awkward trying to get on and off while maintaining my modesty! I am not really known for my gracefulness. Also, with all the walking I would be worried about my thighs getting irritated by the end of the day.

I love my dresses and skirts and usually wear them to DL unless the weather is going to be cold. The key is wearing the right dress. Comfortable, obviously, but also modest enough to climb in and out of rides without flashing anyone.

My rule of thumb is that, when sitting, I am sitting entirely on my own skirt, and if I had to straddle something, like the seats on Splash, my skirt has to be wide enough to still cover my legs to the knee. Does that make sense? (Also, regarding Splash and the other rides - you'll find you dry off twice as fast in a dress as in pants or shorts!)

As for the irritation issue a PP mentioned, there is a trick to that: Deodorant, applied to the inside of the thighs in the morning. (Stick or spray, not roll on.) Works for me.

WOW!!! Great tip!! I'll use that trick!

Just a word of warning. If you do choose to wear a dress or a skirt, Luigi's Flying Tires blows air up. So if you don't want to reenact a famous Marlyn Monroe pose, hold on to that skirt.

I've worn dresses to Disneyland and never had a problem. (<--Although you can't tell, my picture is of me in a dress at Disneyland) Many of the rides at Disneyland were built back when ladies and girls wore dresses all the time.

Also for chaffing prevention - Bodyglide. I use it for running, and it works great for general use as well. Sold at running and sporting good stores.

My sister hardly ever wears pants (at DL or in regular life). She wears leggings underneath her skirts at DL (as do my girls). I'm thinking about wearing a skirt one day next trip - I'll be wearing bike shorts underneath if I do.

My DD's and I wear dresses all the time to DL when it's warm. The key is to make sure your covered, so longer dresses work great. I usually wear a knee length or maxi dress or skirt and have never had any problem getting on and off rides. My mom, who is older, wears a maxi dress every time and has no issues either. I agree too that I dry quicker from water rides in a dress then shorts or pants! I always wear a dress or skirt if we do water rides. I hate walking around damp for hours but that's just me.

And I'll add on that there is air blowing up *as you are walking to your tire*. It gets stronger once the ride starts, but there is air even before that!

I love wearing skirts and a-line dresses to the parks. I wear sort of bike-shorts (but not actually bike shorts) under them, so if I flash, it's a decent flash. I loved the 90s fashion of sundresses with bike-style shorts, and I'm bound and determined to bring it back, for everyone, for all-time. :) I also don't mind wearing athletic shoes with it. Such a rebel. With comfy feet.

haha don't come to my dance class ever then, I always wear booty shorts to work and I'm well over the age of 16. :lmao: Booty shorts, cute top and cowboy boots, that's my go to in summer, otherwise I die of heat stroke. LOL

I agree with everything else you said though. I don't think dresses in the park would be comfortable at all so I wear capris or bermuda length shorts, but never dresses. Not only is there chaffing (for me) but I don't like wearing dresses with athletic shoes and I refuse to wear flip flops or sandals to the parks, there is just no way my feet could handle that at all. One year I was Meg (from Hercules) for Halloween, wore a long purple dress and sandals, just doing the Halloween party my feet hated me the next day.

So, I think the high will be in the 80s. It might take a few hours to reach that temp......then remember DLR at night time cools down, I always need a sweatshirt. Just my 2 cents......:)

I like capris or crop pants that are made from moisture wicking fabric. Sometimes I wear skorts. I buy them sporting goods stores and online. I also like lots of pockets that zip.

I have the chafing problem and have tried all the products mentioned above, none work more than about 10 minutes for me.

Stay cool...literally!

I like wearing skirts to DL. I'd probably like dresses if I had any that worked, but I find it very hard to get a sundress that will pass my test. It doesn't seem like a hard test but most dresses out there fail. It's a sundress, so make the fabric breathable. I don't want spaghetti straps because I do wear a...can I say the b word? ...a top undergarment with straps, and I'm old enough to dislike those straps showing. I want something loose enough for comfort but not a tent.

But anyway, I like wearing skirts, and have the same reasons as others have mentioned! They are cool, dry fast, and comfortable. I wouldn't wear them every day, but I was surprised to discover how very practical they are for park wear. I went to a DL event that called for a dressier outfit and wore a skirt. I had a change of clothes but found that the skirt was actually just as good.

Interesting topic!! I usually go in cooler seasons so never thought about a dress or skirt in the park! I would think shorts or leggings underneath would be a good idea. Ya just never know ;).

The shoes are always my challenge. I live in AZ and live in flip flops, or Keens when I hike. I do have regular hiking shoes and running shoes. I never know what comfy shoes to wear to the parks that will still look cute in pictures. I'm vain, I know. I enjoy boots & clogs with heels most of the time in our winter. I'd love suggestions :).

Have fun, stay cool and enjoy your trip!!

+1, early mornings might be chilly too.

I've worn a skirt/dress to the parks sometimes. I agree that if it's long enough and full enough, you should be good to go on almost anything. Rides where you straddle things (like the carousels) could get a little awkward, but again, the skirts I've worn have been full enough. (On Dapper Days, a lot of women ride the carousel sidesaddle. I'm not sure if that's technically allowed or if the CMs just let it slide when the park is taken over by folks in fancy and vintage-style clothes.)

Besides the Flying Tires tip, you may be unable to ride the Silly Symphony Swings. At least, I was heading to the ride with my friend and her mom and just as I set foot on the stairs I decided no, that was not a good idea. (If I had a long/full skirt, I wouldn't personally ride it even with leggings; I'm not terribly vain but I don't think it would be an attractive look for me.) For most people that ride isn't that big a deal, but I thought I'd mention it...it was one of my friend's mom's favorite rides!

As I like to at least have the option of riding everything during a trip, I would not personally plan to wear a skirt/dress EVERY day for that reason...maybe one or two, for fun.

I think a longer maxi style dress like the one in the link below would be fine! Will still cover all the bits and pieces and be comfortable. Especially if you get a stretchy fabric :)

I wore a strapless maxi dress and a shrug on one of the evenings we spent in DCA, granted, we didn't go on a lot of rides. I did wear shorts underneath to avoid the chafing issue. It was super comfy, and felt a bit dressier.
