We are planning our next trip to Disney in early 2009. My boys will be 7 and 3, my oldest will be in 2nd grade and we will most likely pull him out of school for the last time (we did it in kindergarten).

I was thinking about going the week the kids go back to school after New Years. I have heard this is a good time crowd wise and he will not really miss to much in school. I figure the first week back after a two week break will be a review and not miss much new stuff. It would be Jan 5th thru Jan 10th.

I am just starting to look up some stuff while I am reocovering from surgery.

Sounds like a great time to me! :thumbsup2

The DIS is a great place to spend your time while recovering from surgery. I am doing the same! Good luck for a speedy recovery and hours of happy DISing! And :welcome: to the DIS!

We are going this year after christmas but waiting couple of weeks due to fact that the first 2 weeks after x-mas break is the end of the nine weeks and we didnt want my son to miss any big projects. So before you set a date I would advice looking at next years school calender to find out when the grading periods are.:teacher:
Have a great time.:cheer2:

We are going this coming Jan 4th - 10th. We have a 3rd grader and one in
4k. They will be going back for 2 days after the holiday break and then we will be on our way. We got report cards in November- I don't know about the grading period, but the kids are still young enough that am sure they are really grading them on overall progress- so..... I don't know, but for us this will most likely be our only trip to disney, so I think it is worth it to go at a time when there are fewer crowds when we will enjoy ourselves more. Also, my husband and I both attend school, so we had to fit the trip around our schedules, and for some reason, they didn't coincide with the kids. Have fun and happy planning!

First I want to say Welcome to the Dis we are glad your here:thumbsup2

You will find if you search many threads where people have debated the pros and cons to taking kids out of school.

Personally we took ours out for trips right up thru middle school.
Now that DD is in high school we won't she asked us not too.
She will miss 2 days for our April trip and is fine with that.

Hope your recovery goes well:wizard:

One of my few early childhood memories is my mom picking me up from school early and taking me back to her office. Car was packed with luggage and she had a small present waiting at her desk. A pair of Mickey ears.

"What's this for?"

"What do you think it's for?" she replied.

Such an awesome memory for me to this day.

have fun!

For our upcoming trip we will be taking the kids out of school. I was worried at first as this is my DD's first year in middle school. However, I emailed all her teachers and the principal and they all gave me the green light to take her for the week. They are even going to give her work in small amounts over the month or so before we go to help us out. As far and my DDs that are in kindergarten and second grade their teachers didnt even blink an eye. They said to have fun and not worry about anything.

I have taken my kids out of school for our past several trips to Disney. It hasn't impacted their grades at all. Mine are 10 and 7. The smaller crowds definitely made for a fun trip. Hope you have a fabulous time!

We've taken kids out before -- years ago, but in 2nd grade it shouldn't be much of a problem at all. Early January is a good time. That time should not conflict with the marathon either. Good luck!

I wouldn't think missing a few days of school in 2nd grade would hurt that much. But you know your kids. What about the fact that they would be out of school for almost 3 weeks then? Will it be hard to transition back? That's an awful long time for the little ones to be off a schedule.

We aren't sure which would be better. If we go the week they go back they would spend at least one day trying to get back in the groove and talking about the holidays and it would be the end of the nine weeks. My oldest adjust very well.

I am simply thinking that would be a better week for him to miss. I think we are going to take him out and we can do the week of Mardi Gras after that. This may be our last chance. I may wait until the school year starts and ask the teachers opinion on when would be best. We have to do it in Jan because DH cannot mis work in Feb.

Can be on the cool side in January, bring some warm clothing.
