Help me convince DH to camp at WDW...

We are avid campers. We camp all summer long. I keep trying to find ways to stay at WDW cheaply and keep coming back to camping....

Here's my list...

we're driving down anyway....[going to Anna Maria Island after WDW]

we have all supplies for camping...

our kids love camping....

the campfire sing-a-longs..

boat ride to MK...

Spectromagic...

It sounds so fun there plus they have a pool! We always camp at state parks with lakes [boating] but never do they have pools! That would be great...

the only negative it's June 1-6.....so possibly too warm not to have A/C??

Are you guys tenters? Or do you have a camper of some kind...you can always grab a small window unit A/C and rig it to a tent door, ...or heck, a couple of fans will keep you cool enough if youre sitting/sleeping right in front of them. Or you may want to think about renting a camper, one of the posters on this board rents out her camper that sleeps up to 9, sets it up at your site before you arrive , and takes it down after you leave...all you have to do is show up and "move in". Check her website, its www.CampAtTheFort.com. How ever you decide to camp...you will see Disney in a whole new light by staying at the Fort....its a great place to spend time with the family, and unwind from the parks.

I have seen this unit...maybe I can convince DH we can splurge on it.

We will never buy a pop up or fifth wheel so trying a camper out doesn't work either. We tow our boat typically so can't tow a trailer too.

That cooler will not work in Florida. It is too humid there!!!

You need a true airconditioner. A window unit can be had for less than $100, and you can zip it in a door.

Yep....there's some good fishing going on there, bass, cat, perch. And if they jumped on the line for ME, ANYONE can catch'em there!!! And lotsa wildlife to watch!!

He'd move there tomorrow if someone would pay him to drive a golf cart around all day!

We're not bringing the boat. I was just explaining why a fifth whell or pop up won't work for us [many rent from Tina to try it out, etc.].

And it's a ski boat. We don't fish, but my kids would love to try it I'm sure. So if we camp at WDW, we'll have to try it.

Great ideas about the coolers. Any suggestions for the $100 units ? That would be along our lines.

It's never too hot in Indiana at night but $100 wouldn't be bad.

We will bring the dog but sadly will have to board him at the WDW kennel but I like that we can grab him and take him on walks and to that pet park there.

I'm going to show him the thread I mentioned.

I was just wondering if anyone had a reluctant spouse.

We love camping but we also have loved staying at POP and Poly.

DH just doesn't associated WDW with camping.

DH was reluctant on our first trip.... for about 5 minutes after the TT was setup. Before we left he was already plotting how to swing being able stay longer on our next trip! I think at this point if it were up to him we wouldn't even bother going to the parks and he complains if we don't get to spend enough time staying in FW while we're there.

I know you have your dates you'll already be in Florida, but you mentioned affordability. One big item to consider is the rates you can get at different times of the year. "Value" season is the cheapest ($43 for a tent site). "Holiday" is roughly double ($84). June is "regular" season, and it's still a bit pricey ($61) compared to "value". Add on a AAA 20% discount during value season (it's less during other seasons), and it's a downright bargain.

Something to consider for your next trip I suppose.

Don't waste your money on the Kooler-Aire- I did and it is a total waste, we tossed it somewhere in the shed.

You are allowed to keep your dog at your tent site as long as you're there-you just have to kennel him when you leave your site. Have a great time!

You can order a window unit air conditioner for just under $100 at walmart. Its tough to find them in stock at the stores during winter months...but they have tons in the store during the summer. Home Depot and Lowes also have them in the $89 range. Site to store delivery is usually free at all of these websites.

My wife would NEVER tent camp before we went to the Fort...our first trip we stayed in a cabin...after looping the campgrounds on that trip....she decided it was nice enough to give tent camping a try...I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY!!! We tented in May with a portable A/C, and she really enjoyed it...her only complaint was having to go to the comfort station for those middle of the night bathroom visits! After that trip, on the way home, she said "maybe we can get a small camper for our next trip"...again, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY!!! We still havent gotten the camper, but we are using Tina's 5th wheel in October to see how we like it.

SPOUSES CAN AND WILL BE CONVERTED AT THE FORT!!!!!

I see you are from Mandeville LA. It shouldn't be any hotter at WDW than at home. Of course you probably have A/C at home...

We go to the Fort for three weeks around Christmas and it is often still in the 80's. But we wouldn't have it any other way. We've been there at other times of the year but prefer the decorations and festivities of the holiday season.

But anytime at WDW is better than anytime any place else. And the Fort is best of all. Two trading posts, a pool, transportation access to anywhere, laundries, golf cart and canoe rentals, nightly movies and smores.

DH loves to camp more than me, he just thinks WDW = hotels.

Will the pool be done by end of May? That's one of the reasons I'm considering it.

So I get a portable A/C unit and stick it in the door? Any worries with it?

Tina's isn't even available during our time but again we could do POR for less than total cost of Tina + campsites during regular season.

Yes, even with delays the pool should be done well before your arrival.

Yes, some folks simply set the AC in the door and zip down as snug as possible. The main problem I see is if you only have one door, getting in and out could be a hassle. If you have two doors, I would probably want to tape up the gaps to help keep bugs out, but that's not practical if it's your only door. Also, you need to consider where the condensate will drain, you don't want it flowing toward the tent.

You're right...We share weather with FL....whatever its like here, in Mandeville...it will usually be like within a day or two at the Fort. Us MandeVILLANS are generous like that!!!

We went in August last summer and it was hotter 'n hades, but the oldest son and his friend were in blissful comfort in the tent because we brought along one of our window AC units. We just brought along one of our curbside recycling bins as a carry unit for gear, and then used that upside down at the site to set the AC unit on. We positioned it under an overhang of the rainfly and plugged it in.

I think we actually had a more difficult time getting the trailer cooled down with the built in AC unit on the roof than they did getting the tent cooled off.

As far as being able to get a good AC unit cheap, they will probably be on the store shelves next week. Just went looking for a sled for our kids and they were already gone except for the local hardware store. Plenty of displays for garden hoses and sprinklers just being put out! We won't even see any green grass for 3 or 4 months and they're putting the sprinklers out???
