that would be interesting....

must be an event or trend that happened prior to 1655 - I'll be giving a TEN minute speech on it:scared1: and I don't want anyone to fall asleep!

I also have to do a biography on someone that lived prior to 1655....this person can be connected to the same event.

Will y'all throw some names/events out there so I can find something?

FWIW its for a Western Civ class...

Ivan the Terrible. There are a number of things associated with his reign that you could choose from. No one will be bored; he's very interesting.

Henry VIII and the Anglican Church's separation from the Catholic Church.

I find the Tudors fascinating.

How bout the the invention of the printing press (movable type). I think the guys name was Gutenberg.

Elizabeth Bathory--boring, she's not!

Ok How about Christopher Columbus? and the discovery of the "New World" by the "Old World".

I just spent yesterday doing research on Mary Queen on Scots - Her life (and death) was extremely interesting.

Have you read "The Other Queen" by Phillipa Gregory? I just finished it and found it VERY interesting. :)

As for the OP's topic..how about Queen Elizabeth I? She was quite the fascinating character.

black plague - so much on it, both from a pandemic point of view and economic

All sorts of major exploration going on at that time, new colonies being founded in the new world, Spanish interaction with natives in South America, Mexico, and Florida. Colonial battles between the Spanish and French of English.

How about the founding of St. Augustine, FL - the oldest city in the US (sorry Jamestown, you are a fraud). Founded by the Spanish to counter a French colony attempt made near present day Jacksonville, Florida, the French tried to sail down the coast to attack the Spanish but got caught in a hurricane and shipwrecked - the Spanish found the survivors on the beach and slaughtered them all (the location is now known as Mantanzas "Slaughter" in Spanish). The Spanish then attacked what remained of the French in Jacksonville, slaughtered most of them, too, and drove off the survivors, leaving Florida in Spanish possession instead of French and St. Augustine has been around ever since. Some interesting characters you could do a biography about, too.

Second this one, we had a group do this in my history class last year. Very cool, and their presentation was 30 or 40 minutes.

My vote is the black plague too. My students thought it was really cool when I taught it in class.

thanks so much! Y'all have given me a lot to check out tomorrow! I knew I could count on you! :thumbsup2

EEK! I can't imagine doing a 30-40 min presentation! 10 mins is WAAYY to long for me! LOL
