We just got back from our Disney trip with our kids who are currently 4 and 2. Normally, I would have said let's go back ASAP but this time I'm putting an actual planning time frame in place, with time to save up and all (I know, I'm bad at that). So here I am. Now, I've been to WDW 4 times. The first time I was 8 and we stayed offsite. But the 3 times since then I have stayed at Contemporary and twice at POP including this last time. I like POP a lot, but we have decided that our next trip we are taking along my mom. She's our kids only living grandparent and she has only ever been once before (when I was 8, obviously, and that was almost 30 years ago - no I won't be any more specific than that ;)) and she can't afford to go on her own. She will be thrilled and since this trip may be her last for awhile I want to make it special. That's a lot of backstory to lead up to this:

I really want to stay at a nicer hotel. Maybe AKL? I love the lobby there. So, there will be 5, maybe 6 of us if my stepdad opts to come (he may but he isn't a big fan of heat like in FL, and we'll probably be going in April so he may decide to stay home). Give me the pros and cons of your favorite resort please. And, it can be at any price level. I really just want to know why your favorite is your favorite.

My wife and I went in October and took our 3 year old for the first time. We also brought along my mother and her mother. We looked at two bedroom places in the DVC resorts and we also looked at the treehouse villas in saratoga springs. In the end we found that the best use of our money was to get two preferred rooms at CBR that were connecting. With the savings, we got the park hoppers and dining plan, well worth it. It worked out well for us functionally and financially.

If you stay at AKL, i believe you will have to get 2 rooms and that is even if you only have 5 people. The rooms there only sleep 4, unless you get a crib for you child but they would have to be under 3. We are taking my mom to CSR and got a preferred rooms, so we are close to everything. We are going in Sept. with free dining, so are really getting a great bargain. Good luck shopping around. We have stayed in a few deluxes, but found them super expensive, so now stay mostly in moderates. POR is also a great hotel. Enjoy.

If we went with POR or Carribean Beach is it usually easy to get adjoining or connecting rooms? I would prefer connecting rooms but adjoining would be ok. Also, I've heard to Caribbean Beach is really spread out. Is there a spot that would be better (location wise) if we went with that?

I'm planning that we'll need 2 rooms, regardless since 2 kids and 3 adults would probably be a tight squeeze in 1 room, even though it would be more cost effective. Would we be better off with a villa even if we were planning on eating on a dining plan (so not cooking on vacation!).

From what I have read, it always seems that 2 standard rooms always are cheaper then a villa or a 1 or 2 br. For some reason they always come out to more then 2 rooms, probably because they have a kitchen area. I don't want to cook on vacation either.:stir:

For a moderate, I vote for POFQ. Not as much walking, love the boat to DTD and you can pool hop up to POR for an easy afternoon by the pool.

For Deluxe, if there are any mobility issues at all I would check out Wilderness Lodge. It's still an affordable deluxe like AKL but right in the middle of the action. You have the boat available so you aren't tied to the busses for all parks and you can always boat over to the monorail.

If you want to stay in the Epcot area don't forget about the Swan and Dolphin. I know two rooms at a Disney Epcot area deluxe wouldn't be our budget but we could stay at Swan or Dolphin and still have the great location.

a party of 5 or more starts to have limitations on where you can stay. Have you looked into renting points to stay in an AKV? that might be a better idea.

I haven't got the foggiest clue on where to start with renting points. Plus, doesn't that limit you package wise? I mean we wouldn't be able to do a dining plan and ticket package with the villas, would we? And do people even consider selling points a year in advance? Most of the posts I've seen for that are people who need to use them in the next few months before they expire, not somebody giving up points that they still have a year to use. I don't do well with last minute stuff.

Have you looked into Wilderness Lodge? I'm planning a trip for six. (one of whom is autistic, requiring a bit more space) The Deluxe rooms fit our needs PERFECTLY. Not to mention I love the theming.

HI, my family has stayed at OKW, BCV, and AKV - Kindani. We really enjoyed all three. We all love AKV, i missed it for a day when we went to BCV but then i fell in love with BC for another whole set of reasons. I believe, from my experience that its hard to go wrong with many of the deluxe resorts. they are all grand and special in their own way. I always look at pictures and try to stay at the resorts that stir up emotion or feeling and fit into my budget. Looking at pictures, AKL, BC, WL, and POR, POFQ, AND AOA wow me or make me feel something special that comes from the inside. it does get so confusing because there are so many variables like time of year, transportation, number of days, number of days on ticket, special events, etc. I try to create numerous scenarios and price out different vacations options to see which fit into our budget, then from those i consider the advantages and disadvantages of each. It takes quite a while as my family leaves it up to me (no input at all:upsidedow). And i continue to have new ideas as time passes. Its hard to make a decision and commit to it.

AKL and Contemporary are hands down my childrens favorites. There are alot of activities at AKL, nice pool, everything is in one building, bus transporation isnt bad at all (really easy to walk out of building and hop on a bus without much walking). aklresort.com has sample activity pages to look at and it has a little more inforation too.

We were able to stay with a 40% off room discount at AKV - Kindani studio room in 2009 and we rented points to stay in a studio room at BCV in 2010. We rented from a dvc owner who posted points for rent here on the disboards.(you have to be signed in on the dis to see this thread in the dvc section). We did our research before deciding too -getting contact information, calling 3 references or people who had previously rented points from the dvc owner, visited orange county website to verify land deed was in owners name, paid through paypal only after getting and verifying with disney the reservation confirmation number. The experience was great but we definately were taking a chance because the dvc owner owns the reservation and can change or cancel it. We were given the ability to cancel up to 30 days prior and pay half up front and half 45 days out.

If I decided to rent points again i would go through dvcrequest.com (davids rental). HE rents for $13.00 a point and has a point calculator on his website. dvc resorts include OKW, SSR, BLT, BCV, BWV, WLV, AKV (some in kindani and some in Jambo - upper floors of AKL). GFV are currently under construction. Rooms types available at dvc include a studio room with one queen bed and sleeper sofa and a kitchenette, or 1 bedroom villas with a full kitchen or 2 bedroom villas with a full kitchen (these are usually the one bedroom plus the studio room). OKW studio rooms have 2 queen beds however.

The advantage of renting dvc points.

1. you can stay for a fraction of the expense of rack rate. But sometimes disney will offer discounts that come close in comparison - depending on variables of your trip.

2. You can rent 1 or two bedroom villas to accomadate more people without renting 2 separate rooms.

The disadvantages are:

1. You do not get daily maid, trash, and towel service (but you can pay a daily rate for these if you need them). Cleaning service will come every four days for no extra charge.

2. You have to pay for reservation upfront (im not sure if its 100 percent or not). there is a small fee for submitting application and you may not get your first choice.

3. There is no cancellation (if you have to cancel your reservation you lose your deposit).

4. You need to try to book reservation through davids rentals at 11 months out to find availabity. In 2010, we were able to find availability a 7 months out but renting has increased in popularity since 2010 making it more difficult to find DVC owners with availability for the exact dates you need.

5. DVC rooms are in a separate building from the main resort building. Some have their own front desk but some don't. Therefore, there will be a little walk to get to front desk or amenities. (however the walk is probably shorter than at values and moderate resorts).

6. Once you decide on a resort you cant really change it because most likely availabity will not exist.

We had a great experience renting but I would think very long and hard before doing it again because of the disadvantages i described above.

I believe AKL would be a great option for your family.

I love Polynesian. I am not a fan of AK. I stayed there and felt it was like the Wilderness. I recommend coming before april to avoid the heat.
