I need some help...I need a new washer and dryer and was thinking of the Maytag Bravo. Does anyone have any experience with this brand or the Bravo? I really need to get a washer and dryer that is going to last and this seems to be reasonable in price. The salesmen really can't give you to much information. Please let me know what you think.

:confused3

We have a Maytag (not bravo) that we bought 5 years 1 month ago......the pressure switch went out (that's the part that tells it that the water has filled up and shuts off the water....overflowed and flooded the room!!!!)

Anyway.....it's a simple replacement so hubby called appliance shop to get part....ordered it via model number over the phone.....go to pick up part and it's not the right thing....ours is large and metal the replacement part is half the size and plastic. Figured the guy looked it up wrong....take original part in and the guy tried to find it in the online catalog, no go.....called his supplier who pulled another off the shelf, nope, plastic small not big metal.....tried calling the Maytag store and same thing, wrong part under our model number.

So I get on the phone and call Maytag repair from the tag on the washer...even though I don't want to pay for a repair guy, I just want to get the part. Explain the situation and after a bit of checking they call me back and tells me that since it's over 5 years old they don't carry parts.

Ummmm, excuse me? So 5 years is the expected LIFE of a washer now? Wouldn't it make more sense that they don't stock parts for something LESS than 5 years old because it shouldn't be breaking? (We had this problem with our vehicle because it was a totally new model and they weren't stocking parts for it because it was too new for those parts to break yet....ummm, wrong, it's broke, lol.).

So I asked point blank....so you're telling me that Maytag washer aren't expected to last for more than 5 years. And he in all seriousness and with no humor, said "that's a long time for an appliance m'am".

Gee, tell that to the washer that we replaced 5 years ago....it was 20+ years old and we only replaced it because we were moving and decided it was too heavy (all metal not plastic) to move it would be cheaper to buy another when we arrived. WRONG!

So...I'll never buy a Maytag/Whirlpool again, if they only expect them to last for 5 years!

So...now to use my washer I have to unplug it, and switch out the wires because my DH jerry-rigged it so that you fool it into knowing when it's full and when it's not. What a pain, but at least I don't flood anymore!

But I'm researching on the longevity of washers now, as I fully expect a washer to last me at least 20 years.

Yeah, I need a little more than 5 years. The one I need to be replaced is at least 20 years and is a Maytag. That is kind of scary!!!

We had a Maytag Neptune. It was a front loader -about 7 or 8 years ago when front loaders started making a "come back"
It was horrible -so horrible that there was a class action law suit. We finally gave up on it last year and got an LG.
I personally think it is worth the money to get the online subscription to consumer reports.

type in the name of the washer and reviews in google and you may find some comments from other people.

We have a 10 year old Maytag Neptune. It has had a lot of repairs over the years. Washers these days have circuit boards. I think the Neptune has at least two and they are very expensive to replace! I wish washers were simply mechanical, and so easier and cheaper to repair.

Our front loader has a horrible problem with mold. I have to run it with two cups of bleach every month. (This is a Maytag repair suggestion @@.)

Before I bought a washer I would research whether mold is a problem with all front loaders, and research Maytags in general. Also get opinions from people who have owned the machines for longer than a year or two.

We also had a Maytag washer and dryers and had problems. We wound up settling with Maytag because there were problems with the set from day one.

We now have Kenmore and have no problems.

We have a Maytag Neptune which, like a previous poster, we purchased when the front-loader first made a comeback. It's been nothing but a headache since the day we got it. We also purchased a new Maytag dishwasher about 7 years ago. Nothing but problems with that as well, including racks that had the vinyl coating peeling off within 3 years. When we called Maytag customer service about it, they said the racks would really only last about 3-5 years!!! WHAT?!?!?

Also, the washer ended up being part of a civil action suit and the dishwasher was part of a recall due to the panel wiring bursting into flames :scared1: !!!!

We've had lots of problems with our Maytag appliances and find their customer service greatly lacking. So far, we've replaced the dishwasher with a Bosch and are looking to do the same with the washing machine. I will NEVER buy another Maytag appliance.

I just asked on the community board about various washer brands. I was in the market myself. The overwhelming advice was don't get a Maytag. I ended up with LG. There was a lot of good information provided if you can find the thread from a few days ago.

That's Lucky Gold Star, a chinese company. Fairly good rep. Originally partnered with GE about 15 years ago, not sure of the status now. An appliance made in Asia has about $100 shipping in it right now, so you should be able to buy a comparible american made machine for less. I'd check out whirlpool or ge, just for comparison.

p.s. I hear Bosch is best. You'll have the big shipping cost added tho.

Are you using HE detergent or the regular detergent? Regular detergent will cause mold issues in front loaders because it produces more suds and then you get soap residue in the seal around the door. The mold will grow on this soap residue.

My wife and I have a Maytag Bravo washer and drier and we love them. They're only about 6 months old at this point, but we haven't had any problems with them. We got the drier with the steam feature and my wife really loves that.

Oh, I hope this is the case. I got the dryer first because that is what went out. If I like it I am going to go back and get the washer. Thank YOu for posting.
:thumbsup2

HE detergent.

My Maytags are horrible also. I bought the set maybe 3 years ago and the washer has been fixed no less than 10 times. The dryer to this day takes 4 hours to dry a load of towels, about 6 to dry jeans. It was really raising the utility bills. We're not in a position to buy new, so we line dry now. I HATE my Maytags. The only appliance they do well are dishwashers..

I have a Bosch front loader for a little over a year and love it. To prevent mold, I keep the door open so everything dries out. You might want to check out the website www.epinions.com. I get a lot of good advice there when buying appliances.

NOTHING is built to last anymore.....dishwashers, washer/dryers, refrigerators, heat pumps, water heaters. It's so ridiculous...they're purposely made not to hold up so you have to buy a new one. If you have a 20 year old appliance, all I can say is, keep it.

I wonder if your dh could track down the used part from an old machine, kind of like you find replacement parts at the junkyard. I'd look into it, maybe even run an ad and see if someone is getting rid of their machine that's like yours. Never hurts to ask!!!

LG is actually Korean, at least from Consumer Reports. The LG were the number 1 and 2 spots on the latest test ratings. I considered Bosch as well, but they seemed to be around the middle of the rankings.

When I bought my new washer -- wow, has it been two years ago? -- I started out thinking that I wanted a Maytag. I'd always heard how great they are, how they last forever . . . when I started investigating, I heard differently. I understand that they USED TO BE the absolute best, but they were bought out by another firm, and now they're rather flimsy.

I bought a Whirlpool Duet, which is the best-selling front-loader. I've been thrilled with it. It really does live up to the front-loader hype.
