I found lice in my daughters hair tonight-went and got RID and did the treatment, washed all her sheets etc in hot water, threw away hair things. Is that all I need to do? Anybody have any experience with this? We leave for Disney tomorrow, I bought extra RID to bring with us. Should I ask for a clean pillowcase every day? How likely is everyone else in the family to get it?

I read that lice don't like dyed hair - time for the fam to find a new color?

You know next time you go to WDW you should probably keep it quite so those pesky un-invited guest don't try to come along! :)

Sorry I don't have any real advise, hopefully someone will come along soon with some help for you.

Anybody? This is so gross I'm hoping they are all gone..........my poor little girl. We wash her hair every day so this is proof clean people can get it.

It's my understanding that Rid does not work as well as the prescription formula you can get from your pediatrician.. Any chance you can contact the office before you leave?

make sure you vaccum your couches, floor, and anywhere your child would have layed her head down.

I would ask for a new bedding everyday. Just because you RID doesn't mean you got rid of all the nits...just the adult lice. I would be sure you check her hair to make sure that you get all the eggs.

Hope this helps....i do home daycare and just had an inservice about lice;)

oh and another thing...i heard lice don't like heat...use a hairdryer on the rest of the family if you can.

I feel your pain:grouphug: We found lice in my son's hair 1 hour before a flight to Italy!

If possible, have her sleep alone in a bed, roll away, something. It will be hard to not give it to the other person in the bed. New towels, sheets, daily would be good. I wouldn't necessarily tell housekeeping that its lice, maybe just a "medical" condition.

Did you get a little metal comb? Get one. Every night lay a white towel on the counter and comb her hair over the towel. Pinch any live eggs, or critters, that come out...to kill them. If the comb won't scrape the eggs off her hair, then you can either pull out each hair, or scrape them off with your fingernails. This will probably take you over 30 min. each night. Pay close attention to around the ears and back of neck.

No hats, or a different one every day. No stuffed animals, they need to be put in a plastic bag for 2 weeks! No sharing combs, brushes.

Good luck! We were not able to get rid of my son's while on vacation, but did keep it from spreading to other family members and got rid of them when we returned home.

Ok, we had a horrible lice problem in my classroom this year :scared1: . We had one child who couldn't quite get rid of it, and kept reinfecting everyone. Here's what the nurse said:
1. You need to use the lice comb every night to pull out nits. Rid does not get all the nits, and if they hatch you start all over again. We had a mom who used Rid once and then just the comb every day. Her kid was the first one cleared. Keep checking for a while.
2. Wash all bedding, pillows, etc in hot water. If you can't wash it put it in a plastic bag and seal it so no air gets in. Leave it for a couple of weeks. This goes for stuffed animals too. This is crucial and the reason the one kid kept getting it over and over. If the lice are on a teddy bear they will just crawl right back onto your child's hair.
3. I have heard all kinds of things that lice don't like: hairspray, dye, dirty hair, but our nurse said these really don't do anything.
4. If you have girls with long hair, it may help to pull their hair back (less chance it will rub up against infected child's hair). Since it's hot you'd probably do that anyway.
5. I would probably ask for new sheets on your DD's bed just in case.

Lice love anyone's hair, they get kids at every socio-economic level. They spread most easily among young girls because they tend to play with their heads close together. With the kids in my class, it seemed to spread to the siblings, but not the parents. Have you checked everyone in the family yet? I would check everyone every night for a while. I somehow managed to remain lice free even though about a third of my class got them. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. You have to be so vigilant to really get rid of them. It makes my head itch just thinking about it. I wrote all I can remember, the CDC also has info on their website.

Try pouring vinegar on her head too. Supposedly this helps kill them. I would have the bedding changed everyday too.

Check her hair everyday to make sure there are no more "nits". You may have to cut her hair if it is thick.

Supposedly lice only like clean hair. Lice is no reflection on your cleanliness.

Make sure that you boil all of your combs and brushes (or buy new ones). Put all stuffed animals in a black plastic bag for a couple of weeks. Vacuum REALLY good.

They are really gross and will probably give you the "willies" just thinking about them for a very long time. Hugs to you:grouphug: Try to have fun your your trip.

Rid does not work well at all. When our Kindergarten was plagued with Lice this year we used the Walgreens brand. It worked pretty well but we did have to use it a couple of times.

I have also been told saturating the head with Mayonnaise or vasoline will also kill them (its supposed to suffocate them) but it didnt work well for us.

Somebody said no hats--we have to wear hats at disney we are fair skinned! Maybe the same hat will be ok if I comb the nits out every night? (are these nits ones that i missed doing the rid treatment or are these new from after the treatment?)

The other posters made me remember this. You can't use the chemicals too much, but you can saturate the hair in something thick and greasy. I'm pretty sure this will only kill live lice, it will not help with nits. Some people use olive oil, mineral oil, or baby oil.

My DS gave them to me a couple of years ago. The only thing that worked for me was combing out my hair every night with the lice comb. Every other day I would cover all of my hair in olive oil and a plastic bag (to keep it from getting on anything). I left the oil on for 3 hours then would rinse it out and follow with vinegar and rinse that out. I found some studies on line that said that the lice and nits will sufficate in oil after about 2 hours - I did it for 3 just to be safe.

So you tried RID and it didn't work? You guys aren't making me feel any better. I'm never going to be able to go to sleep and i'll be exhausted tomorrow. And I have to sleep with her tomorrow night? DO i have to check my head every day then?

Sorry to say this, but I would. I just had them in my classroom, and I still had DH check me. The RID usually works to kill the living lice, it just doesn't do much for the nits (eggs). These are attached to the hair, so you have to comb them out.

Before she went to bed I re-combed her hair and found a few, i think i got all of them. Could more appear? Did you catch lice?

I would buy cheap hats and just toss them away a the end of the day!
The whole lice thing just grosses me out and I dread the day my daughter comes home with them. Even sitting on a plane i think about what if the person that sat here before me had lice and now they are crawling in my hair...Lice is the one thing I don't know how I would do with!

I didn't get it. Which was good, because I was pregnant and didn't want the chemicals with the baby on the way. You have probably done all you can for now. The eggs are hard to see since they don't move. They are hard to get rid of, but from my experience, the people who went through their child's hair every night for a couple of weeks did fine. I would check the rest of the family every few days just in case.
In the case of the child who couldn't get rid of it, they were getting the lice, but not the eggs. So once the eggs hatched she had it again. They also weren't cleaning her bedding properly. Again I'm so sorry you have to do all this. Just the word lice makes me itch after this year. Try and get some sleep. It sounds like you are doing the right thing so far.

I think you could wear the same hat, if your DD will keep it on and won't be tempter to swap with siblings. Make sure it's one you can wash.
