Help....laundry emergency

Things are extremely tight around here this month. I had to purchase a much less expensive laundry soap....with hopes that it will work well on our messes.

Its powder in a smaller size box with a fold close lid......typical average box.

Well my beloved cats for some reason decided to jump onto the dryer and knock my box of laundry soap all over the floor. The floor was not exactly clean....bits of grass(football player), dirt from socks, etc.
I cannot afford to buy new detergent until the end of the month.

I have swept all the detergent up (bits of grass & all) and put it back into the box.

QUESTION: Do you think it will be okay to use?

I can't see why it wouldn't be okay. I will not use it on any delicates or special items in the laundry, but for towels and the boys regular clothes I am hoping its ok.

What do y'all think????

Probably would be ok.... but, I would atleast try to go to the dollar store and get a new box. I feel like I reado somewhere about using a TINY drop of dishwashing soap in the washer and it would be ok. I am not sure about that, but you could google it. Sorry that happened!

I would use it. I would maybe just do a double rinse to make sure the dirt is removed.

You could also add a bit of white vinegar to the laundry. It helps keep the clothes clean-it won't make your clothes smell.

This is so much better than what I thought happened. I thought you were going to say the cat's used the laundry soap as a litter box.

I thought the same thing and was going to suggest rinsing off the cats' paws so they don't ingest the detergent.

I wouldn't use the dispenser for the detergent - sprinkle it in the bottom of the washer, then add the clothes on top. That way, the dispenser doesn't get dirt or grit in it. Other than that, it's like washing dirty clothes. The detergent's still good.

The floor must be clean, too.

Could you put the detergent through a sieve before using it? The sieve would catch the grass and larger particles at least.

I would use it for play clothes and towels, but would probably buy fresh detergent for my work and better clothes. I wouldn't want to get any grass stains on the good stuff.

Y'all are the best!
Thank you so much for your response......I know that I can always count on the wisdom of the budget board to come through:cool1:

we have had something similar happen, just with liquid, and probaly a bigger mess! we just used a bunch of different clothing and made sure one peice (usually towel or cloth!) got thrown in with each next load!

Its soap it will clean, and really the extra rinse will be fine, you probaly put much worse in the washer without even realizing it!

I did "strain" the detergent through one of my smaller colanders/strainer and that helped to get quite a bit of anything yucky out.

(I had to do a spell check on colander because I would swear that it should have 2 letter "l".....collander, but that is incorrect)

The detergent should be fine to use as there are particles of dirt and debris found on soiled laundry. I would get rid of the cats though. :scared1:

I think it will be fine. I'd try to pick out any larger bits of things that I could, and not worry about the rest. Remember that the dirty clothes might have pieces of grass and dirt on them when they go in the machine, so they'll wash off anyway :goodvibes

I hope you are joking! If not, please don't get any pets. A responsible pet owner doesn't give their pet away when they do something naughty.

I agree with everyone else, I wouldn't think twice about using it. I was going to suggest sifting it to try to remove any larger grass blades, but sounds like you already did that.

Oh and I just wanted to edit to give you a tip I use that might work for you. We are in FL and it is humid. I prefer powder detergent, but didn't like that sometimes it would get clumpy, plus those cardboard boxes with the flip top are less than ideal. I use an old (washed out) plastic cat litter holder. They have a snap open lid, and I just scoop my detergent out of it and snap the lid back on. They keep any moisture out and if it fell, everything wouldn't spill.
