found a ballpoint pen went through the dryer all over the girls' brand new winter coats

Was able to get everything off of the inside but I cant get the shells clean.

I have tried Oxiclean, oxi magic, goof off, alchohol, and hairspray, now I am washing them again.

Any other ideas?

Can't help you but I've been there and done that. I have a sweat shirt to prove it. I tried everything like you, even stain stick and spray and wash. It did lighten up but the stains are still there. Thank goodness it was small enough and in the right places so that it doesn't show very much.

Good luck!!

I think Shout (?) makes color catcher sheets that you can throw in the wash with the clothes. They might help to get the ink out. You can find them in the laundry aisle. Iused them when I washed tie dye shirts with other clothes and they didn't get the ink out completely but it did help.

I don't know if it will work on coats, especially if they went through the dryer, but try some hair spray. Lots of it, spray it on and scrub with a tooth brush and keep wiping the stain with a towel or paper towel.
Good luck...I would be soooo mad!:goodvibes

ETA...I just read that you tried the hair spray. I use Zout for laundry stains, it never fails me. Maybe hairspray and zout together.

take baking soda and liquid shout and make a paste out of it.... rub it in with a toothbrush.. let it soak for an hour and try washing it...

I know you said you used hairspray already but did you use the cheap stuff?? It needs to have a "laquer" base in order to be effective. Something like AquaNet or similar. I've done this before and have used many cans of hairspray in order to get the stains out. I think I used 2 cans per coat. It just has to be the really cheap and extra extra hold stuff in order to possibly work.

If you have then I am :confused3 to tell you what else to try but I hope you get it out soon!

Thanks!
Tried WD40 and no luck. I tried Rave hairspray, making a paste of baking soda and laundry detergent ( I dont have any zout) and nothing... I dont know what else to do.

called Lands End and they offered to replace it. I declined as I didnt think it was right, and it was a gift from a friend so I would have no receipt anyway. They have however earned a customer for life!

ink, lets see. Im trying to think what my great grandma used. hydrogen proxide. Thats what grannny used. We used to call her the stain master and bring her clothing all the time. I tried it once, Poured on alot and left it sit for about a half hour with paper towling over it, Dab frequently and you should be able to lighten it. Keep at it, Usally about 3 washings gets the ink out.
Have you tried Dreft? That gets out some pretty gross things.
From the net:
Lay the stained area on top of a clean dry white towel. Apply nail polish remover to the ink stain and blot with another clean white cloth, removing the stain as you blot. Rinse thoroughly.

Carburetor (sp?) cleaner. My dad's a mechanic and told me this but it works like a charm on ink--I've tried it and it does. Just make sure you very thoroughly rinse it out before you put the item back into the washing machine b/c it IS flammable. Let us know how this turns out!

How about goo gone? I'm not sure if it will work or not but its worth a shot.

Rubbing alcohol works on some kinds of ink, but I am not sure it will work after the stains have been through the dryer.

And I agree about Lands' End. They have the best customer service ever.

EDIT: Just re-read the original post and saw you had already tried it. Sorry!

It has to be aerosol hair spray, the ether in that stuff is apprently what does it. I've heard that when you have an inorganic stain, like ink, you need something inorganic, like aerosol hairspray to get it out.

I came across these hints, I'd never heard of using rubbing alcohol, see you've used that already, but this website says nail polish remover might work...

Ballpoint Ink Stains
....

Lay the stained area on top of a clean dry white towel. Apply nail polish remover to the ink stain and blot with another clean white cloth, removing the stain as you blot. Rinse thoroughly.

Apply your normal liquid laundry detergent onto the ink stain and allow the garment to sit for 3-5 minutes.

Wash in the warmest water that the fabric can tolerate.

Before drying, double check to make sure the stain was removed. If not, repeat the previous steps until it is.

*******

Treat a thickly folded absorbent white cloth or towel with Nail Polish Remover or Acetone, dab the affected area with cloth, and blot with dry towel simultaneously
Treat a thickly folded absorbent white cloth or towel with Spirits of Turpentine, dab the affected area with cloth, and blot with dry towel simultaneously
Treat a thickly folded absorbent white cloth or towel with Afta® or Carbona®, dab the affected area with cloth, and blot with dry towel simultaneously
If one solvent cleaner does not adequately solve the problem, move down to the next in the order these cleaners are given. NEVER apply solvents directly onto surface.

********

I will say, do not put it back in the dryer until you have gotten all the ink out.

I've heard that for some stains putting a salt & lemon juice paste on the stain and then putting the garment out in the direct sun can do wonders. It's a type of bleaching, but if you've already put all this other stuff on the coats, what can it hurt?

If otherwise you would consider the coats to be ruined, then you might consider bleach. Test the bleach first on an inconspicuous place - to make sure the bleach won't possibly melt the fiber of the cloth (which it can do to some synthetics). I would use one of those "bleach-pens".

And a lot of people around here swear by Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser, but I don't know if it would work on a coat.

There's a product called Amodex that is supposed to be able to get out ink, but I've never used it.

I found this website, Mrs. Clean, they mention using a product called "Motsenbocker’s Lift Off" plus some other methods not already posted here.

Good luck,

Update:

well most of the marks came out of Karissa's coat but Kate's is a lost cause I'm afraid. They did lighten up quite a bit but I had to send them to school in them today so I had to dry them

Can you dye the shells to a shade darker than the ink stains?

I have had a lot of luck with the Carbona Stain Devil products that you can buy at Wal-Mart. They have one specifically for ink.

My magic stain removing method is:

1 cup CLOROX 2 COLOR SAFE BLEACH
1 Cup CASCADE powder dishwasher detergent.

Dissolve thoroughly in HOT water in the lowest water setting on your washer. Add the clothes with the stains, let it agitate for a bit, then turn the washer off and allw it to sit overnight. Next morning turn it back on, raise the water level and let it finish the cycle. If you have a front loader just use a big 5 gallon bucket of water instead then toss the coat in the washer the next morning.

I got out 5 year old baked in formula stains off of all of my baby clothes with this method when I went to pass them on to my SIL. Works great!
