Help.....is my child disturbed????

My DS7 has pulled 2 of his baby teeth out prematurely. My dh and I are very concerned about this. The teeth are loose but definitely not nearly loose enough to fall out. For some strange reason he yanks them out. Anyone ever know another child who did this?? We are freaked out!!!

Does he just work them looser and then pull them out or is he pulling them out with pliers?

I did that with 3 of my teeth, but it was because I just wanted the money!

I just called the Pediatricians office and the nurse was chuckling....I am calming down now.

"Loose enough to fall out" is very subjective.

Lots of kids, once they can feel that a tooth is loose, can't leave it alone, and they keep wiggling it and poking at it until they can get it out. The feeling of having a loose tooth bugs them. So your son may feel that his tooth is "loose enough to fall out" as soon as it's loose enough for him to wiggle it.

Unless he's going after it with tools (like a previous poster mentioned!), I don't think he's disturbed at all.

My daughter does/did this. She HATES the feeling of the tooth being loose and just works on it day and night.

My son has done the same thing with his loose teeth. He also just turned 7. My 12yr old daughter on the other hand, would leave them 'till the bitter end. Her last one hung on for months. She could push it clear out of her mouth. I'm voting for son's way. lol

He's seen the dentist after pulling some of them, and is none the worse for wear.

It was loose enough to be moved but still very tight in the gums. He said he worked it til he was able to yank it out. eewwwwww Maybe he will become a dentist

My DD12 did this when she was younger and it freaked me out at the time, too. She's turned out ok and has great teeth.

Years and years ago I did some research on developmental milestones and such for someone who was writing a series with an 8 year old in it. One of the things I found out that was just fascinating to me was that the irritating habit of kids to worry at their baby teeth until they fall out is normal and a good thing: once the teeth are even a little loose, the adult teeth are pushing at the baby teeth, and kids' worrying at it gets rid of the tooth faster, leaving room for the adult teeth.

Right after I did this research, I talked with someone whose daughter had to go to the dentist to get 2 baby teeth removed; curious, I asked if her daughter worried with her teeth and found out that daughter was obsessively neat and tidy, to the point that it worried the mom. I'm sure she didn't worry at her teeth. . .So while it is gross, it's the way kids are supposed to be.

Don't worry, your little boy is just being a little boy. This is only the beginning, my son is almost 13 and the things that make sense to him & his friends

I can't even count the number of times I've looked at his artwork and said to him, "You better tone this down or I'll be getting calls for you to visit the guidance counselor soon."

Don't most kids do this? Our kids did this, I did it too, the kids' friends as well.

Believe me, I was a dental assistant for 5 years (adults) so I know a thing or two about teeth. His tooth was able to be wiggled but was not considered to be what I would consider "loose". It was still very tight in his gums. I don't think most kids will force a tooth this tight. I can see if it was super wiggly that he would work it out, but this tooth was still not ready. Now he has a gaping hole in his mouth.

I will disagree. Walk through any 1st/2nd grade classroom during story time and you will see any kid with a loose tooth wiggling the tooth to make it come out faster. If it is loose enough to wiggle, even a bit, a kid will play with it until it comes out.

lol... I'm thinking you're disturbed by NOT expecting him to get it out. No offense, really, but it's funny how little things like this show such a difference. I absolutely hated having a loose tooth when I was younger... I would push it, twist it... beg other people to get it out. Looking back I think I was afraid if it got loose enough it would fall out on it's own and I would swallow it.

If this is the worse thing you have to worry about with your kid being "disturbed" I think you're doing one heck of a job.

I would tell you that she has a bit of an OCD picking thing, as an FYI to you. She picks her skin.
