We booked our rental car through Avis almost 2 months ago with the pick up and drop off times for the flights. 4 Days ago, the airline changed the times big time!!!! Arriving MCO 1 hour earlier and leaving 2 hours later. What should i do and how will they penalize me if i drop it off an hour later? Please help me.

If returning the car late there will be be an hourly charge added to your total. Check the Avis website to see what that charge is.

Can you change your times on your reservation or does it take it into another 24 hour period?

I think as long as you don't go over another 24 hour period, the rate should be the same. Example: Pick up at 3:00PM, as long as it is returned by 3:00PM whatever day there shouldn't be another charge. But if you returned it at 4:00PM then you would be charged for an extra hour.

It all depends on how the arrival and departure times fall. A call to the rental company should be able to straighten everything out.

Three extra hours, one when you arrive, two when you depart.

Most but not all of the time you can show up early and get your car early with no extra charge. The downside in your case is that you have to bring the car back earlier. You can ask how much more the extra hours will cost when you arrive at the rental counter. If worse comes to worst you may just have to hang around the airport (want to try a restaurant at the Hyatt hotel?) for a few hours.

Caution, not all rental companies let you simply bring the car back late and just pay the extra hour or extra day rate. You may be back charged the entire rental at a higher rate even if you request the extra hours upon arrival at the rental desk. This, together with how sticky they are about showing up late for pickup, depends on how busy the rental agency is.

The extra hour and day rates are guaranteed only when you reserve the car with all of that time included.

So you may still be stuck with re-shopping for a new car rental given that the rates will probably be different when you try to modify your existing reservation.

I use Hertz. As long as I pick up the car within business hours on day of pickup, early or late, I don't get charged extra. There has been times when I picked up late and got a better car.

I have picked up hours early and late.

Clarify policy with the company.

Rental is based on 24 hour periods IE if you rent for 7 days, it is considered 7 24 hour periods. Pick the car up at 10 am, it has to be returned by 10 am 7 days later.

I have been charged extra by rental companies around the country if I returned the car late. Depending on how late you are several hours may be as much as one days rental.
