Help! I nipped my baby's finger

Our pedetricians told me to bite them too. I did that with all 3 kids, never used clippers till they were older. My DH nipped DD15's nails when she was first born and it was that doctor who told him to bite, then we moved here and had 2 more kids and our doctor here said the same. I did it when they were sleeping too, just cause I didn't want them to think they should bite their nails. Might seem silly but I didn't want them to get the habit from me.

As for OP, new moms worry about everything, that's part of the job. This happens, and in time you will see that though I know it is hard now.

If you are going to leave the bandaid on for 24 hours, please cover her hand with a sock or baby gloves. It would only take a second for her to choke on the bandaid.

Massage the babe's fingers and toes with Vitamin E oil. Buy it full strength.
I love it. I buy it at Trader Joes for under $5.00 a bottle. The cut will heal quickly. ::yes::

No need for any bandages with Vitamin E oil. And your hands will look lovely as you get the oil all over your hands as you are massaging the babe. A win win situation for the both of you.

You have definitely earned your mommy badge today:grouphug:

Now you can take a deep breath, relax and have a cookie. I remember nicking my little ones finger, it scared me to death. I remember those first baths too. I was mortified at bath time for the first month and it was silly when I looked back on it. It's tough to be a new mom sometimes.

Just wait until the teenage years!! I'm really getting scared now:scared1:

Oh honey, join the club! I did this with my last DD when she was probably 2 months old. We were at a huge family reunion and apparently I thought this was a good time to cut her teensy little nails, with my WHOLE family watching. Of course I nipped the tip of finger, she screamed bloody murder and I burst into tears. I felt awful, she was really crying and I swear if she could've spoken she would've said 'Mommy, wth??' I was so embarrassed because my entire family was sitting in the living room while I did this. Don't worry, we've all pretty much been there and your DD's cute little finger will heal just fine. It's scary that it bleeds for so long though, isn't it? I thought my DD had some kind of clotting disorder or something!:rotfl: The dang thing just bled and bled and bled. She was fine though. Yup, you've earned your poop, snot and blood badge today. Good job!:goodvibes

Soooo true!

Welcome to the wonderful world of motherhood! I think this is the number one thing we all do....but it will be fine!

We love our first born children so much because of all the near disasters we have learning how to be a mom. I cringe when I think of all the things I did the first time around I learned to never do again. The poor kid, I still walk up and hug him for no reason and he is 25. Its for all those near death experiences I put him through he doesn't know about!

PLEASE don't say it's the same for toenails!!:scared::crazy2:

ummm good snack!:rotfl2:

Sorry couldn't help myself.

Check to see if you need to go to the next size diapers. Its more than just the weight limits. Sometimes babies have a big butt and need a bigger diaper.

Baby will be fine. This happened to my baby when she was just 2 days old. I was too scared to trim her nails, so my older sister was helping me, and she did it.

No permanent damage. Just 15 years of razzing my sister:flower3:

I have these clippers and have never in 2 yrs nicked my DD. I usually clip the nails first then file them using a small emory board.

Whereas those were one of the two clippers we had, and they were the worst offender before I came to my senses and just slowly and carefully bit off DS's nails.

You don't want to get lazy and bite a bit then tear the rest off (like I recently did with my "bad" fingernail that grows funky and caused my finger to be red and swollen for days). You nip nip nip all the way around, don't tear it or pull it at all. DS's nails were like paper, so easy (though, hmm, biting paper isn't easy).

Poor baby, but I'm sure she will be fine. It sounds gross but I bit DD's nails too. I only started using clippers when she was a little over 1! It worked great for us.

Sorry to hear that. They've worked great for me. Everyone I know uses different clippers and some people went through several pairs before they found ones that worked for them.

I had little nail sissors that were made for infants with a very rounded edge. Never had a problem.

I did manage to cut one of my son's ears when cutting his hair. Unfortunately he was old enough to remember and remembers it being MUCH more traumatic than it was. It's one of his first memories.:o

Oh my gosh...I remember when I did this, too! I called my mother (who lived about 2 miles away) in hysterics because her finger wouldn't stop bleeding. By the way, she's 19 now and shows no sign of real damage. ;)

Congrats and welcome to the club!!

Been there done that, with my 2nd dd ( now 15) who swears she remembers every horrible thing I've ever done to her.

She also tells me that she could never be as good a mom as I am, so it's all good.

Same here. I nipped ds's finger the first time I tried to cut them, after that I never used anything else but biting on all three kids' nails. Never accidentally bit them, no infections and never tore the nail. Just bit them in short little choppy bites almost like the clippers would do. Worked like a charm.

Awww.... I did the same thing with my first born..... I learned after that, not to cut their nails till they get a little older, I always just kept mittens on them to keep them from scratching theirselves. She'll be fine....

I think every mom has done that. I've actually done it to all my kids talk about not learning my lesson:rolleyes1. It will be fine.
