For whatever reason I lost track of the days this week and thought I had more time. I need to find a really good book to read to my son's K class tomorrow. I also want to incorporate a sinple craft and snack. Any ideas? I want a fun book that will make them laugh. They are learning about Spring etc. now if that helps. TIA!!!!princess:

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems is perfect for that age group (and adults love it too!). :thumbsup2

Bear Wants More - it's about a bear that wakes up very hungry in the Spring after hibernating all winter. I read it last year to my DD's first grade class and the kids really seemed to enjoy it.

I used to teach first grade and had guest readers every week. I can tell you that they will like almost anything your son likes. They just love having guest readers (we called them "Royal Readers"). Dr. Suess goes over well because they like the rhyming and especially love when grown-ups stumble over the words a bit. Does the teacher want you to do a craft and snack? I never minded if a parent left a snack for us to eat later, but I would have expected to have a parent ask me if a craft was appropriate. To be honest, it would depend on the parent doing it and the particular craft. I don't know your situation; maybe it is set up so you have that option. I just thought I should mention it because an act of kindness on your part could possibly be an unintentional inconvenience for the teacher.

I second the "Bear" books. They are by Karma Wilson. I love Bear Snores On, but it's more wintery. She has a great cadence to her writing...fun to read and fun to listen to.

Good luck!

I really like the book Parts. I forget the author. There is a sequel called More Parts and I think there is a third one now. It is hysterical...perfect for 5 year olds.

I read No Such Things by Bill Peet to DS's Kindergarten class last year. If you aren't familiar with it, it's a book about made-up creatures. The kids loved it! After I read the book, I passed out paper and crayons and asked the kids to create their own animals. The pictures they made were great and they really seemed to enjoy the story and the activity.

Another book I've read to that age group is Stand Back Said the Elephant, I'm Going to Sneeze by Patricia Thomas. It's a very entertaining sotry and a lot of the kids hadn't heard it before, so they really enjoyed hearing something new.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I am going to go to the bookstore today and probably buy them all! :cutie: As for the craft, most of the mystery readers do a small craft and snack so I know it won't be an issure for the teacher. I appreciate you mentioning that though because I would never want to impose. I am so excited! My DS doesn't know I am the reader this week!

Third on the Bear books!!! Love them all! (Probably more than my kids)

I just thought of a few more (can you tell I like kids' books?)...

Dear Mrs. La Rue: Letters From Obedience School or The Baby Tamer by Mark Teague (or any other Mark Teague books).

Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. This one seems to be less well-known, but it's one of our faves. For a simple craft, you could have the kids color and cut out stars and tape them to their bellies.

If you can't think of a craft that goes along with the story, you could always have the kids draw a picture of their favorite part of the story or have them think of a different ending to the story and draw/write about it.

Probably too late, but my daughter LOVED The King Who Reigned. It was on the order of Amelia Badelia (where everything someone said can be interpreted a different way). The author is Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster!). Great book I think everyone should check out.

Elmer the Elephant is a great book. It is about a patchwork elephant that just wants to fit in. I've read it to my son's K class then the craft was an outline of an elephant and I had the kids glue on squares of construction paper, and of course googly eyes so they could make their own Elmer.

I love the Bear books, and the Elmer craft sounds really cute! Jamie Lee Curtis's It's Hard to be Five: Learning How to Work My Control Panel is very cute and funny. They could make a feeling related craft- maybe paper plate masks? I like all her books. Click, Clack, Moo is fun, and you could do a farm animal craft.

For Fall not Spring but y'all need to read "Fall is not Easy." Super cute!!!

I'm a children's librarian so I have to do story hours all the time! Lots of great suggestions already. I love Bear Snores On. Another fun book that is a big hit with the Pre-K and K set is Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin. For a craft (keeping on the cow theme), you could modify some of these ideas to fit your age group. Perhaps do any cutting ahead of time, or anything that would require a lot of dexterity and coordination.

Kids also enjoy making paper bag puppets. Use white paper lunch bags and have the kids add spots with crayons. Pre-cut felt or construction paper pieces to make eyes, a snout, and a tongue and have the kids glue them on then add a yarn tail.

Hope that helps you a little along with all the other great ideas.
