Help, I erased photos on a memory card

1.0 GB Memory Card (MC) was used in camera A. MC was removed and placed in Camera B (but was formated for 2.0 GB MC. While MC was in Camera B, Camera B was clicked "OK" to format. Thus photos were erased.

Is there a way to recover? Is there any software I can purchase or download to assist with the recovery? Anything?

I had erased some files from a memory card and used
File Rescue Plus. I believe there is a trial version, that recovered what I needed without having to purchase the software.

You can google - file recovery, or some phrase like that and get other options.

If the card has been reformatted not just erased you probably are not going to be able to recover anything.

sigh............they were reformated. I went to 'reformat' and clicked okay.
guess they are gone.
Now, how am I going to tell her....................

Give it a shot anyway. Formatting does not erase data on the card, just the pointers to the data. The big problem you might run into though is that the difference in formatting (1G vs. 2G) may have a significant impact on the ability for utilities to work properly.

Well, my son (20) went to the above site and we paid $39 for a one time use. I was for Less than 1gb. Unfortunately, my son needs to put his hands behind his back and READ before clicking , as he clicked over to save some useless photos. I wish I was there , I would have told him which pix to save. oh well.

I felt so bad , it was worth it. I have SOMETHING to give her. thanks for all you assistance.

I'm a little confused by the 1g vs 2g thing. The camera will not format a 1g card as anything but a 1g card, nor a 2g card as anything but a 2g card. Both will be formatted in FAT16 format, so that's no big deal.

Any decent drive recovery program should do the trick... there are many out there. Most have free versions that will show you what they will be able to recover, and maybe even will let you recover a small number of files before having to pay money.

I have more on the MC that I can save, that son was not able to.

the pix were taken on a 1.0 GB on Camera A. I put the MC in camera B that was formated for 2.0 GB. as I clicked to 'format" (to 1.0 GB), the photos were lost.

I will research more for other web-sites that may offer some free trials. When this happened, I was upset , went to bed, then I thought, HEH, I am going to ask my DIS Board Family! Sure enough, help was there. I never needed this type of assistance, and your ideas were much appreciated. I cannot thank you enough.

I'm still confused.

The camera doesn't matter. It knows when you put a new memory card in, and knows how big that memory card is. So the fact that you put it in a different camera doesn't matter. Camera B itself is not "formatted" in any way. And if you put a 2gb card in camera B, it will be formatted for 2gb, just like it will in any camera. Neither camera should format a 2gb card as if it were a 1gb card.

There were some problems with the Canon S1 IS recognizing a large card as a smaller one due to a firmware restriction. It believe that it could only recognize up to 2GB even if the card was larger. I belive it was a FAT16 vs. FAT32 thing, but there was supposed to be a firmware fix to correct it. It is possible that the camera in question could only recognize up to 1GB where the other one could recognize more.

Many cameras (including mine) did need a firmware upgrade to recognize cards larger than 2gb (a.k.a. "SDHC" cards), because normally, memory cards are formatted in FAT16 format. (If you want to get really picky, it's just "FAT" but the FAT16 term is commonly used now.)

FAT16 cannot handle a partition bigger than 2gb in size. That's where FAT32 comes in, which can handle much larger partitions. However, since it's a different format, something that only knows FAT16 won't be able to deal with a FAT32-formatted card.

But anyway, since the cutoff is 2gb, there shouldn't be any issues with a 2gb card being formatted as 1gb.

I used a program called RECOVER MY FILES, to recover pics from a hard drive that had been formatted and then had xp re-installed....I saved 18,000 pics...

It appears the OP was referring to the card that had been in use. So the one camera was using a 1GB card, the 2nd was using a 2GB card and he placed the 1GB card in the camera that had been using the 2.
