HELP- I arrive in 3 days and STILL can't make up my ind..

I will also go for the GCH even if it is not a once in a life time trip. When you return to OZ you will kick yourself once you have seen the hotel. Our trips, the hotel is part of the experience and the walk is nothing.

Anyone can see the Grand *the lobby is lovely and can be enjoyed by anyone* our room was dark and small at the Grand ~ we love HoJo.

Honest Opinion...

If your not concerned about the money... The Grand is amazing with its own entrance to DCA, its luxury, the rooms are gorgeous and very comfortable. The service is amazing.

If you are more money conscious then I would definitely recommend the Hojo. The rooms are pretty basic, but clean and comfortable and they have a wonderful pool area. Especially for the kiddies. The traffic noise at the Hojo or any of the other off site hotels I have stayed at, and would also recommend to you "Carousel or the Tropicana Inn & Suites", I wouldnt worry about. Besides after you spend an entire day at Disney, your exhausted! Your head hits the pillow and your out like a light. The last thing that is going to bother you is traffic.

Personally the more time you spend on these boards, the more you will find that Hojo is a personal favorite off site hotel among most who have stayed there.

Stayed at the DLR a few times I just couldn't pay the Grand rates, One trip I finally gave in and booked the Grand it's amazing! Ever since we always stay at the Grand now!
I say book it if you can!

I cancelled Grand Californian because I thought it was very expensive for what you got.

Good thinking! Exactly how I feel. Small rooms, dark hallways that go on forever. We happened to be put in a room that was almost as far away from the elevators as you can be, which caused us to have to backtrack (which drives me batty...I will plan my errands in a circle around town so I don't have to backtrack) every time we went to or from the parks.

For me, the good parts of the hotel are the public parts (as long as it's not during xmas time, because that tree destroys the lobby for me, as it makes it very dark...ever since Lasik I haven't done well in dim rooms, and at xmastime I might as well close my eyes while walking through that lobby).

I do not feel that you get what you pay for at the Grand, and when we stayed it was prepaid b/c we used DVC points (at the end of the time when you could use points to stay in the *hotel* part of the place) so we didn't really *pay* for the room at all...

I mapped out the path we took from the room to the center of the esplanade (getting to DCA's special entrance is obviously shorter, but then if you're not wanting to go to THAT part of the park, it's not..if you're starting your morning at the bakery and heading to Monsters, or TOT, you might just hit the esplanade and have the same approx distance), and it was almost exactly the same distance as from the sidewalk outside HoJo to the same spot. :headache: Our room was across from, augh, can't remember, but we were rather far "down" in DTD when looking over the balcony...we had to walk ALL the way back, turn a corner, walk to the elevator area (think of it as the center of that part of the building), go down, then basically walk under quite a bit of the distance we'd just walked, to exit further "up" in DTD than our room was. As we walked along DTD to the esplanade, we would wave to our room and wish for a really good trampoline to just get up to our balcony. Highly frustrating.

Sorry, I always go ON, but it just BUGS me that one's experience in that hotel is SO weighted on what exact room you get! If we'd been one wing further into DTD, there's an exit down a stairwell that gets you right near La Brea (very close to the bag check area to the esplanade to get you to DL or the main gates of DCA). Of course going back you can't take that locked door, but it would have been nice for the mornings!

HoJo is good.

However, you mentioned PPH concierge...PPH is our fave hotel now. We've stayed there a few times, and the rooms are big and bright and cheerful and airy, the lobby is bright (even when there's a tree in there), and I've heard their concierge is on the same level of the Grand's concierge. Of course concierge is only worth it if you'll be there to partake...bottled water, coffee, tea, appetizers, beer/wine later on, desserts after that...

I'd go with PPH, concierge or not, personally. ;) Plus, you get to walk through the worth-it-to-Molly parts of the Grand to get to DL and DCA! A win-win situation.

But make sure you still have time to cancel hojo, OK? Don't want to get hit with a cancellation fee.

(and I doubt this is ONCE in a lifetime...if you were truly planning on it once, your kidlets would be older! I'm sure you'll be back. :goodvibes)

Yet another strong vote for Hojo's for you and your family. Very short walk, only 7-8 minutes, easily doable to go back for afternoon naps. Your kids will love the pirate's cover splash pool area, and the rooms are so clean and tidy.

You won't be disappointed. You will be in the parks far more often than in the rooms. This is one time it's not worth it to pay more for a room, IMO.

Good luck, and keep us posted! :)

The experience is part of the trip for us now too. The thing I like about the Grand is being able to hang in the lobby, fireplace area, or bar, and then go straight to my room (or back and forth). Its not worth it for everyone, and we may try the Hojo kids suite someday in the near future, but the immersion of the Grand is just so nice.

Whatever choice you make, you get to spend time in the parks, and that is where the real memories are made. Your going to have a great time with your family, regardless!

hi again

you lot are great- thanks for all the differing opinions !!!

I spoke at length with my husband last night - it was tricky as I wanted the GC and he wanted Hojos- in the end he swung it by saying how much my 2 young boys would LOVE the water park at Hojos- they won't care that its not super fancy or that they have to be pushed in the stroller a bit further but their little eyes will light up when they see the pirate ship !!!

Thanks for all your help- Hojos here we come ( oh and GC- I will come one day I promise!)

Nat xx

Crazy duck- mmmm Yes i guess it is really- its a long way from Australia to America but just maybe we might get to go visit the rellies again and if so it will definately be via Disneyland !!! But we are talking at least 5-10 years before we can afford it again- tickets to the UK are VERY expensive!!
