Help - I am ruining my shirts!

And I have no idea of what I am doing wrong! I am following the directions to a T for light transfers. What is happening is that if I iron for the recommended time, the transfer paper turns brown and then that transfers to my shirts. If I cut the time, the colors and not clear - they are actually fafed and look like the shirts are years old. I uses Amys for dark tranfers and they are awesome, but these are for some designs that have lots of white background (like stick figures and lettering) that I did not want to cut out.:confused3
 
Have you tried using Amy's transfers for the lights designs? I was under the impression that they would work for both light and dark.
 
I did - and they work, but everything is surround by white so it looks really funky. I have seen lots of shirts that the stick figures and letters have no white around them.....
