Give what you are comfortable giving and can afford. There is no right or wrong amount and your son and daughter in law should be greatful and appreciative of what they're given.
With that being said, my parents paid for just about all of our wedding and reception. The only thing I remember us paying for was my hair, dh's tux rental, wedding license, our rings and our honeymoon. My parents sent champagne and chocolate strawberries to our room and my mom made a scrap book wedding album for us as our "gift".
My husbands parents didn't pay for anything for the wedding and gave us a check for $250.

We are to arrive just a few hours before that ceremony from out of state. They are not even getting married in the state they live in but at a place they both find sentimental to their relationship. They are having a dinner after the ceremony. I think everything is going to cost maybe five thousand dollars. I
