Help! How do I remove a person/object from a photo using PSE 6 or 7?

I've tried following the Adobe instructions, but I can't get it to work somehow...does anyone have dumbed-down instructions for how to remove a person and/or object from a photo using Photoshop Elements 6 or 7, that will blend the background to make it seem that they were never there? (Actually any Photoshop Elements version would useful)

what I do is use the copy tool and copy a section of the background and copy/paste it and then move it over the person/object. (the retangular marquee tool, that's the one I use ) maggie
