:scared1:My neighbor just called me to let me know her daughter has head lice. The daughter was at my house on Sunday for about an hour. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? I checked my daughter and she is clean. They played in my daughters room. Do I need to go to the extreme of stripping her room down? HELP ME!!! :scared1:

Throw all the soft stuff in the dryer, get the spray and spray the bed and carpet just in case. If she sat on any furniture, spray that too :)

My DD25's elementary school was epidemic with them one year, we got really used to the routine.

A few months back my DD7 had lice for the 1st time, OMG how I freaked!! She was at the dermatologist for something else when we found them :scared1: They gave me a script to use. I took anything that could be washed out of her room and washed it in hot water, got her new pillows (they needed replacing anyway) and anything with material went into black garbage bag for about a month. For the rest of the house I washed the curtains (I figured that I might as well do spring cleaning early) and vacuumed the rug and sofa. I thought we were successful, yeah right. The following weekend, she had a B/D party/ Slumber party all of the girls except 1 had lice or nits. What we did was got some dog shampoo and shower caps, slathered all the girls and caped them. We let them play for around an hour like that, then we took turns combing their hair out and rinsing them. I haven't had a problem since.

I guess what I'm telling you is wash what you can and vacuum the rest. The dog shampoo didn't hurt DD in the least and no more lice. Good luck!!

Also, very important. The old way of thinking that lice love dirty hair is wrong. They love clean hair with no product in it. This way they can attach. When you wash you DD hair, be sure and use some gel in it, or moose. They spray with hairspray, the more goo in it the better. They can't attach as well to hair with stuff on it. Also keep it up in a pony tail for a few days. This is what the nurses at school tell us to do when there is an outbreak.

The nurse said that if we can put her animals and stuff in a garbage bag and put outside for a few days that would work also. Its about 15 degrees for a high today, and the bugs cannot survive in that. I will do that then also dry them. I will see if i can find that spray for the mattress and rugs also.

I think I will take this as a time to get rid of the old toys and stuff in her room! might as well get ready for christmas toys!!

Good Plan & I would check DD a few more times. Get a good look behind the ears & nape areas. We had it last year & I still check my kids about once a month. Takes me just a minute or so.

Go out and get a head lice comb. Everyone should have one.:thumbsup2 You cannot "see" those little bugger until they are big.

I use the LiceMeister.

I recommend getting a healice comb such as the licemeister or the rid pick (we used rid), but I'd stay away from headlice.org as they can really freak you out. They would love for lice to be elevated from its current nuisance label to potentially disease carrying. You're going to be freaking out enough as is and you don't need their sensationalistic, nearly fear mongering approach.

Yea, I take their propaganda with a grain of salt but the comb is nice.;)

I've read that lice hate tea tree oil, so if you put some drops in your DD's shampoo and conditioner, it may help the lice to stay off her head. Especially if you let her sleep every night with leave-in conditioner containing a few drops of tea tree oil. Lice only live a few days, and they need a food source, so you don't have to do this indefiniately - just until you feel the risk has passed. However, I do know people who do this indefinately, to prevent their child picking up lice from wherever in the future.

I am not sure what level to freak out on. I freak out over everything anyway... ;)

The neighbors child was at my house for about an hour and didnt lay on DD's bed, or anything. they just sat on the floor and cut out paper to make paper ornaments.

Do you think I need to clean out her closet, spray her mattress, etc?

Vacuuming is good, esp. the chairs. Your main focus is getting a lice comb and doing head checks daily as the primary thing.

They need a head to live on, but you can change the sheets if it makes you feel better. Just keep shellacking her hair with hairspray until it's over with her friends.
