My family will be making our first trip to disneyland this spring. The two options for dates we have are 4/27-5/1 and 5/25-5/29.

Having a hard time deciding which option will be better for our family (2 toddlers). Is it better to go when it might be a little slower 4/27-5/1 or when there are longer hours and more shows 5/25-5/29????

I always opt for less crowds, so I would pick the first weekend. The other dates will probably be around Memorial Day Weekend. Have fun!

Yeah, that Memorial Day week may be crazy busy with both the holiday and some schools letting out already. It would be nice to have fireworks every night, of course, but the crowds may not be worth it.

One thing to take into account specifically for next year is the heavy refurb schedule leading up to the 60th anniversary celebration. Already there are some major headliners that are planned for refurb right up until mid to late May.

You might want to see if any of the planned refurbs are deal-breakers for you. Soarin' AND Peter Pan are down during our usual time frame for going in the spring (early May) so yeah.... we aren't going to plan to go in 2015 until the summer or fall.

Usually I wouldn't encourage anyone to go around Memorial day if they want to experience a slower pace, but we learned this spring (May 9 - 16 2014), when multiple headliners are down, it creates a crush on other other rides because general ride capacity is way down.

So it is not a slam dunk that the earlier time period will be the "slower" time you are looking for. As we all know, the parks are nothing but busy these days and the slow periods are getting fewer, farther between, and much shorter!

One other thing: I am a morning person, and mornings are the best time to try and get some rides done with short waits. When we went at the "slow" time, the park wasn't open until 10am. That negated any benefit in being there at a "slow" time, since the crush of people arriving for 10am is a lot bigger than when the park is open at 8 or 9am. I personally don't expect to ever again plan a trip for when the park opens at 10am - it was a definite disadvantage for us. YMMV of course, because it will depend on whether your family are early birds or not.

Another year I would have said April but because of the previously mentioned major refurb rumors (including rumors of the firework show & world of color & Peter Pan being majorly updated) I vote for May. The rumors also include the addition of a nighttime parade which I'm personally excited about because I remember the electrical parade from when I was a young child! And I agree with being there first thing in the morning, it's the slowest time by far during busy days.

Sorry to hijack your thread but is there a refurb list somewhere for next year? We were thinking about going the third week of April but am going to be majorly bummed if lots of headliners are down for refurb. Thanks!

I saw the refurb list in this week's Mouseplanet update. They are pretty reliable as far as you can be with Disney (refurbs are rescheduled all the time)

Another major refurb next year is the Matterhorn (Jan - mid-May) which I didn't specifically mention because it is not a dealbreaker for me. But it might be for other people.
