My DS in in a play in a few weeks. I need to get him a tye dyed t-shirt for his scene in which he is a hippie in the 60's.

I found TWO shirts, but not sure which one would look more like actually 60's style.

This one, because I remember the smile face in Forrest Gump

Or this one, because of the spirals:

TIA for your opinion!

Okay, I'll admit it... I was in elementary school in the 60s... :teeth:

I don't remember tie dye being so elaborate, mostly the rubberbanded, dipped in dye, ooo look what I got kind of tie dye!

I personally like the first one because of the smiley face but either would be fine.

If you're looking for authentic then the smiley face won't really work (that was more of a 70's thing). As Robinrs said, they were pretty simple. So the more elaborate they are the less they look like the real thing.

Thanks guys! You helped me make up my mind, I am getting my fat butt off the computer, taking a drive over to AC Moore, and I am going to just make him a shirt.

Faster, and more fun! :thumbsup2

You know what they say: If you can remember the 60's, you weren't really there!

;)

Have fun making the shirt!

I vote for making it too as neither one really represents the 60's tie dye. It's the tying that made it right and the bottum one doesn't look like it's design came from tying. The top one does but as the poster above said the smiley face is from the 70's . Good luck and peace out man ;)

:hippie: :hippie: :hippie:

I just bought a kit. Looks like fun! I am going to get it started, and surprise DS with it!

Thanks for your advice. :sunny:

I love to tye-dye shirts. My kids and I make them often during the summer months. Last year we did them at a Cub Scout Day Camp - me as craft director and I had a total of 275 kids!! in different shift.

Let us know how it goes. The longer you let the dye set the brighter it is. Usually they say to leave it for 24 hour prior to washing but I try to go at least 48 hours. Tight rubber bands work well and you can swirl by twisting the shirts first. No two will look exactly the same. A little dye goes a long way. Wear gloves to avoid stains on your hands. To wash the dye off the shirt rince first and then wash in the machine ALONE! Dry and then you are all set to wash with mixed items.

Send us a photo when you can and good luck!

Now that sounds like a great summer time project.

Is making your own fairly inexpensive? (Need all those nickels and dimes for my Disney vacation!).

I'm trying to come up with different projects for the summer, that aren't too high in price.

Maybe we can even make a couple just for our Disney trip!

I bought a big set of dyes from a company called Dharma Trading. Here is their site:

It is an initially some money out of pocket but the dyes last forever! You need the dyes, soda ash for sure. The rest is optional. You can use squeeze bottles from anywhere or buy theirs. I buy my T-Shirts at Jo-Ann's or Michaels on sale.

Somewhere on these boards is a thread about tye dying too. I sued the suggestions and made all of us Mickey Mouse tye-dye shirts. They turned out very cute.

Good luck and any more questions ask away.
