GREETING THE QUEEN MARY 2
- UPPER NEW YORK BAY - THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2004

With the Queen Mary 2 scheduled to arrive on her maiden voyage to New York early on Thursday, April 22nd, anyone who would like to join a welcoming group, at 6:15 AM, Ted Scull will be on the waterfront in Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park at the extreme south end of the Battery Park City promenade in Lower Manhattan. The park is adjacent to Pier A (former NYC fireboat pier under reconstruction), just south of the new Ritz Carlton Hotel and just west of Battery Park past Pier A. The location will afford a clear view into the Upper Bay and will allow photographers to position the Queen in front of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, (with telephoto lens) and the Jersey Central Terminal and the burgeoning skyline of Exchange Place. Jersey City (no telephoto needed). Queen Mary 2 is expected to be off the Statue of Liberty at approximately 7:00 AM.

Public Transportation to Battery Park/South Ferry Subways 1/9,4,5,J/Z,M,R,W. NYC Buses M1,M6,M9,M15,M20 PATH to World Trade Center Site (then 10 min walk south) NY Waterway Ferries from New Jersey Points to World Financial Center/Battery Park City (then 10 min walk south) or Pier 11, East River, Foot of Wall Street (10 min. walk west). Ferry service begins from Colgate, Hoboken and Weehawken at 6am - www.nywaterway.com Staten Island Ferry - departs St. George 5am & 6am - arrives Manhattan 22 min later (then 5 min walk west).

PLEASE NOTE! Circle Line have CANCELLED the boat that they had scheduled for the maiden arrival of Queen Mary 2.
U.S. Coast Guard security concerns apparently are the reanson for the cancellation.

I live in Monmouth County. Just this past weekend I drove up to Weehauken (Port Imperial) to take the NYWaterways ferry across to see the Intrepid.

Take the Parkway North to the turnpike (it’s the second exit over the bridge)
Take the Turnpike exit for the Lincoln Tunnel.
When you get on the “local” road keep following Lincoln tunnel (NOT 1and 9)
Take the Exit for “Weehauken – Last exit in NJ”
When you get off the exit follow the road straight threw the first intersection.
Make a right at the second intersection (you are now paralleling the water)
Make the left at the next light (you will see signs for Ferries to NY)
Follow that road around to the left. You’ll go past what I assume are very expensive townhouses being built.
The parking lot for the ferries is on the right (water side). It’s $5 each way. It drops you off around 38th street. The trip is about 7 minutes so you don’t really have to worry much about the schedule.

They also run to Pier 11 downtown but I think that’s only during the week. Check their website www.nywaterway.com for more info.

If you don’t want to drive all the way to Weehauken you can catch a ferry from Belford (Middletown area) which wouldn’t be as long as a drive but is about a 40 minute ferry ride. Check the schedule for this one too though because there are only a few ferries running on the weekend.

Thank you for the detailed directions. I am hoping to go up Saturday. We were watching it on TV this am before we brought them to school . It is so neat to see her on tv I can only imagine what they will say when they see her in person. Only Dh and I went on the cruise, so the kids do not realize how big the ships are.

Thanks again

HI THERE~

JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU MIGHT ALSO CONSIDER BOOKING THE NYWATER FERRY FOR THERE 90 MIN. CRUISE AROUND NYC.I THINK IT IS ABOUT 30.00 A PERSON. AFTERWARDS YOU CAN USE THERE BUS(FOR FREE) GO UP TOWN(CENTRAL PARK) THEN DOWNTOWN(CHINA TOWN) ALL FOR FREE.

EVERYTIME WE HAVE OUT-OF-TOWNERS WE DO THIS. WE HAVE BOUGHT OUR OWN BOAT SINCE, BUT IT IS MORE FUN TO HAVE THE TOUR GUIDE EXPLAIN.

MY HUSBAND WORKS IN NYC. TODAY HE & THE GUYS(HIS CO WORKERS) ARE GOING TO SEE QM SHIP DURING THERE LUNCH HOUR.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Hey Disneymommie, I can't answer your question but noticed that you are in Brick, NJ. We are also in Brick. Herbertsville area to be exact. We've probably crossed paths many times. Cool!

Hope you get to see the QM2,
Karen

I had to pipe in here. Im in Brick too!!

Glad to see there are more happy hearted people in my town.

Now, I read an ad in the communicator a few weeks ago that a catamaran charter service in the atlantic highlands was booking for about $15-$25 a person a cruise to watch the qe2 and qm2 sail out together.

I was tempted to go but im working this sunday and thats when it takes place.

Im sure the company wont be hard to locate via information 411 or a momnouth co. phone book.

One more thing about NYwaterway... they have buses on the NYC side to take you to different locations in the city, though I just found out that the QM2 is docked about 10 blocks north of where the ferry drops you off so you probably don't even need to take the bus if it's a nice day and you feel like walking.

Hi sitchu2
Glad to meet another Brick Diser!
