Help for ringing in the ears???

My 86yo Dad has had this problem for a while and it is really bothersome. Does anyone know anything that can make it go away or at least not be so bad??

He needs to see and ENT. Most people with ringing in their ears have some hearing loss. There really isn't anything you can do for it. If he needs hearing aids they mask some of the sound but it is still bad in quite rooms, i have it too, I know how annoying it can be! Some people have had some luck with taking fluoride but it also has some nasty side effects, nausea mostly. There is also a surgery that can be performed in some cases but it has a high risk of permanent total hearing loss.

I recall a thread about this a while back. I have ringing in the ears as well. From what I understood by reading that thread is there really isn't much that can be done to stop the ringing.

I run a fan at night so I can sleep--the "noisy" silence IRRITATES me to no end.

Would be lovely if they made a noise cancellation device that was indiscrete but you could still hear the things you needed to.

The ringing is called Tinnitius....and they can do steroid injections into the inner ear....3 consecutive days...to "cure" it. http://www.sheaclinic.com/services_11.asp
It's done under a local. It's a procedure I thought I was going to have to do, but my hearing problem is something different. It's called Otosclerosis and the procedure I have to have done is a Stapedectomy. http://www.sheaclinic.com/services_7.asp

I thought mine was just the tinnitus, along w/ people mumbling....guess not. I'm getting "fixed" on Thursday. Wish me luck....and tell your dad to get it checked....it could be something fixable.

Check his meds. Certain medications and combinations of meds can cause or intensify tinnitus -- large doses of aspirin such as are normally taken by folks with arthritis will definitely do it.

If it isn't the meds, then he should see an ENT about it. Usually true organically caused tinnitus has no effective treatment.

I have tinnitus something fierce.

I've had my hearing checked, changed a couple of my meds. My BP is back into the normal range (it had been pre-hypertension for awhile due to one of the meds I was taking for my asthma.) If it's only in one ear then it's very likely an accoustic nueroma, which generally need to be removed, but fortunately are almost never malignant.

I had an C Scan--negative. They have no explanation at all, and unfortunately there is no cure.

Due to his age, I would look at aspirin use and hypertension as very likely culprits, with hearing loss being another. Have his primary care guy take a look at him first before running off to a specialist to rule out the BP or aspirin use possibilities.
