I am afraid I need to answer the very basic of questions when it comes to DVC. I have hunted everywhere to get this basic information of how this whole system works (DIS site, All Ears, Disneyworld official site) and I just can't find it anywhere. I have decided to pester you guys as I know you will have the answers - I just apologise that they are such basic questions.

Firstly is there a site or page anyone can recommend that gives the information of how this system works - that way I wont keep pestering with easy questions.

Basically, I am hoping to rent somewhere on the Disney property May 5th-9th. It appears I have to buy 'points'.
1. What are points?
2. How do I buy them?
3. How much is each point worth? (eg. how many points for one night?)
4. Once i have bought the points, how do i pay for renting?
5. Do you have to be a DVC member to buy points or can anyone buy?

I am sure you get the picture that i am entirely in the dark. A push in the right direction will be gratefully recieved.

It's good to understand how DVC works even though you are asking about renting points...which is a bad term by the way. You aren't renting points, you are buying a reservation from a member.

Here are some links that should help:

From AllEars: http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/dvc.htm

From this site: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/faq.shtml

Members are the only ones who can utilize their ownership (points) to make a reservation. Of course, the resorts are also available directly through CRO for cash but you'd probably pay substantially more that way.

Here's a link to point charts for the DVC resorts so you know how many points it will take for a member to sell you a reservation.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/DVCpoints.shtml

So you just figure out when and where you want to stay and you'll see how many points it takes. Then you post on the DVC Rent/Trade board on this site and follow the guidelines to ask someone to make that reservation and sell it to you.

This is a private transaction between you and a DVC owner. So they can set the price, payment terms and conditions of how they will work with you.

Good luck! :)

Ok..I'm a little confused....if you want to buy or rent...

DVC runs on a point system....
Click on the dvc section of this site....and look at point charts of
the different resorts.....
This will give you an idea of how many points you need....
IF you buy points.....you are a member of DVC....

If you go to DVC here....click on rent/trade board...
people rent their points....but it is a risk on your part...to trust owner...

For instance....lets say a 1br villa costs 110pts from Sun-FRi...5nights...
I purchased 150pts...cost 13,200....
this ressie will leave me with 40pts to do with as i wish....
Every year I get 150pts....cause that is what i bought....
I will pay maitenance fees every year on 150pts....
about 4.75 per pt...around 700bucks...a little more....

Anyway...I hope that helps....

As the previous post indicates, the terminology can be confusing. It looks to me like you are wanting to rent a specific reservation rather than buy points. You have been given links to the rent trade board, and that is a place to start, but be aware that you are asking for a reservation that starts less than 30 days from now. Not only will that be very difficult to get, but it will put the DVC owner at more risk should you back out. Still not impossible though, so read the posting guidelines on the rent trade board and place your post and see what happens. You can also read over there to see if you find posts that might match your needs. At this point, you wont likely be able to be too picky about WHICH DVC resort, but more likely have to take whatever is available in the size unit you are wanting to rent.

Thanks for your help. It is quite difficult to understand the terminology (American terminology, not just DVC terminology! ). I do, however, think I am getting the hang of it. Basically it looks like I need about 150 points for this time, so i now go on the rent board and post a tiltle "Reservation needed for......" and someone then sends me a pm. They then make that reservation using their points and then sell that reservation to me. Does that sound about right?

Looking at the rent forum, most points are an average of $10. $1500 for 5 nights is actually more then i was expecting. I think i need to rethink this whole thing.

Thanks anyway

You can post your own request (be sure to use "Reservation Wanted:" for the title) or you could also respond to an offer by a member to make reservations for others.

It sounds as though you are considering a 2BR villa if you would need 150 points for 5 nights (unless you are including weekend nights which are about double weekday nights). You should definitely compare rates renting thru Disney directly before entering into any agreement.

Good luck with your decision! :)

Hello, fellow UK person here! :) If you're needing to rent 150 points for just 5 nights then you must be looking at a larger size property I presume? Where are you hoping to stay?

The norm is $10 a point though to rent yes.

What I actually would like accomadation wise, is actually a seperate place for my son to sleep in his cot. I actually don't know anything about any of the DVC places. I assumed that I would need two bedrooms but thinking about it, we could probably anything smaller as long as we can create two seperate sleeping areas, in other words not like a hotel room.

Do the studios or 1 bedroom places provide this?

The one bedrooms would work just fine. It's a lot like a 1 bedroom apartment. Livingroom, kitchen, master bedroom and bath. The one bedroom also has a laundry in the room and a good sized walk in closet. You could put your little one to sleep in the livingroom while you use the Master bedroom, or start him in the master while you relax in the livingroom or out on your patio. Really a 2 bedroom would be way too big, in my opinion.

For may 5th thru 9th your lowest cost one bedroom would be OKW with 48 points on Saturday and 20 points each the rest of the nights. That's 128 points. As someone said earlier, you are getting pretty close - best post on the Rent/Trade board if this is something you want to do.
