Help for a Newbie Annual Passholder - Finding the best hotel discount

Hi all:

We just spent a week at the park and plan to return for the marathon weekend so decided to purchase APs.

I am looking for help to get a sense of when I should plan to book our hotel room.

What is the best guess % discount to expect for end of August, when I should expect to see the AP discounts available for that time period, do I get an email alerting me to the discounts from Disney, or do I need to "stalk" the official DLR AP page, etc.
