Any proven methods for getting rid of the flu quick? The kiddos had it last week and we were glad they had it - terrible parents for being happy our kids are sick, I know, but we figured at least they would be over it by the trip.

We were trying to be so careful not to get it ourselves . . . even had a flu shot for whatever that was worth.

Dh is in bed puking his guts out with a fever of 103. I'm trying to keep after the kids walking around looking like a zombie with a fever of 102. We did get prescriptions this morning for Tamiflu. Any experience with that? Does it really work?

The worst of it should be over by the time you leave. I feel really sad for you. We leave in 7 days and everyone around us has the stomach bug or flu. It is very stressful. Take good care of yourself and take it easy the fist few days of your trip.

I`ve never had it but my kids have. I would suggest you sleep as much as you can. Like Taratink said the worst of it should be over before you leave.

Here to feel better i will give you some pixie dust pixiedust:

Have never tried Tamiflu. I used ZICAM (helps shorten the duration) and Mucinex (help clear mucus ) at the drugstore. Drink lots and lots of water. Some of it depends on how well your immune system deals with it. Get Well. :sunny:

I had a stomach bug Thursday night into Friday morning and I literally slept all day long. I got up just long enough to drive to school and pick up my ds and then come back home and get back into bed. I sure hope that you feel better. It's the pits. I was feeling better by yesterday.

YES!! I know what will cure you in time!! Ask your doctor for a Z-Pack. I was sick for awhile and I was mis-diagnosed (the doctor SAID i had a virus but I really had an upper respirtory infection) and so I got worse and worse and developed walking pnemonia. It was TERRIBLE! I was sick for a whole month when finally my doctor put me on a Z-Pack. It's 2 pills your first day and then a pill every day after that for a few days. It worked instantly. I felt better the next day and by the third day I was totally fine. I was amazed! Hope you feel better!! :)

IF you have an infection, an antibiotic such as Z-Pack(Zithromax) will help. If you just have the flu, antibiotics will not help. Rest, lots of fluids, and time will help. The flu is miserable! Keep washing your hands, and anything the kids might have touched when they were sick should be washed as well. Washing helps break the chain of passing the flu from one to another. Hope you feel better VERY soon!

I took Tamiflu and it seemed to work pretty well for me. I think I was better in a day or two. This was two years ago.

Now listen, I am going to give you a piece of advice that I want you to take. When you get to WDW, IF EITHER OF YOU FEEL THE LEAST BIT SICK STILL, rent an ECV. Rent two if your kids are old enough not to be in strollers, otherwise rent one. You will both be weaker than usual and can take turns riding in it. It might save the vacation even if you're not back to 100%. I think this absolutely falls under "medical need".

Hope you're well soon!!!!

If it's within the first 24 hours of onset you can take Tamiflu, if it is TRULY the flu. Trust me, my DH is an ER doc. If it's not TRULY influenza, just a viral bug, Tamiflu won't do anything but set you back around $60 a course. Go to the doctor, let them check you, don't jsut call and ask for Tamiflu.

Both the kids tested positive for the flu last week and we pretty much have the exact same symptoms, so I'm 99.9% sure it's the flu . . . not that I'm a doc or anything, but it sure feels like the flu!

It was very expensive . . . for me it was $30 and for some reason dh's was $66, but if it really does help it will be worth it.

I'm just really worried about dh. He missed the last two vacations - one because he went back to school and didn't want to miss (that was on the Magic in '04) and last year he missed because he sent me away while he stayed with the baby because I had PPD pretty bad, so dd and I did a girls out week! So anyway, he really deserves to go.

I am trying to let him rest as much as possible, but he can't keep the Tamiflu in because he is vomiting. I'll just have to hope he can get over it on his own.

Is Zicam for the flu? For some reason, I was thinking it was for colds. Does anyone know if you can take Zicam and Tamiflu together? I guess I'll give the doc a call in the morning and ask.

Thanks for all of your replies!

Zicam is for colds. I don't think it can hurt since it's not an internal medication. (If you buy the nasal spray or swabs).

If you'd prefer not to use that, you can try Airborne. It's designed to help with colds, but but it generally gives your immune system a bit of a boost.

Good luck! I hope it goes away soon! :(

MinnieMom, yeah, if the kids tested positive you probably do have it. :( or :) depending on how you look at it. At least you know that the chances of it working are good. Start it asap, I took it a few years ago and began to get relief within about 48 hours I think. I know that by the time I had finished the entire regimen I felt sooooooo much better. Just take it easy, remember you have a few days. Good luck. Hope you get to go and enjoy your trip!

I just looked up Tamiflu in the formulary, it says within 48 hours of onset so you're probably good to go. Can you talk to the doctor or someone on call for him before tomorrow morning?

My DS was sick a week ago this past Sunday, went to Dr. on Monday and was on his feet on Tuesay Morning. He also got a Z-pack and his Dr. bill was $290.00! :crazy2: But, well worth it, as he had to fly back to Afganistan yesterday. :(

When you can keep fluids down start taking Airborne...as another poster said it helps boost your immune system. We start taking it before Disney trips in hopes to avoid catching anything. Try to rest as much as possible before you go and if needed, make your first couple of days a little lighter when you get there. Wishing you a healthy and happy trip!! pixiedust:

Thanks so much for all your warm wishes! We started the Tamiflu so hopefully that will help. I don't know if dh has actually kept his down though. We'll have to see how it goes.

Anyway, thanks again for all your advice. My mom went and got us some Airborne also so we're going to start taking that as well.

I'm just going to keep thinking positively . . . I'll be with Mickey even if I'm not 100%. That can't be too bad!

My daughter tested positive on Tuesday before we left on Friday! Her Dr. gave her and my son (just in case we needed it in Disney) the Tamiflu. Wednsday and Thursday we wondered about the trip but just like the Dr. said by Friday morning she felt better. We had a great trip and I'm sure you will too! Rest read DIS and have a great time!
