I am techno challenged, so I am at a total loss.

We got a router for Xmas so DD could use her new iTouch. We had no problem setting it up and everything was fine until DS got a laptop. Now DD can't use her iTouch and she isn't happy!!!! :scared1:

First can you run an iTouch and laptop off the same router at the same time?

Secondly, the network she used to choose is no longer available, my son's name is coming up instead. If she clicks on that, a prompt for a password comes up, but we don't have one. ??

Or it will skip the password section and will give her an "unable to join the network".

I've hunted around on the web, but I'm getting no where fast. Anyone have a suggestion for us?

One possibility is that son configured the router and so that could be why his name and a password prompt are coming up. My parents had a similar problem last year if my dad was on the desktop PC my mom couldn't use WiFi on her laptop later they found out it was a cable problem between the modem and the router.

what the son has done is not a bad idea - secure the wireless with a password so that only those you want to allow to use your internet connection can. However, he should have shared that information with you. Contact him and find out what the password is, and then enter that when prompted. If that is not possible, look on the router to find what the model number is and google "router [insert model here] reset to default" that will tell you how to take it back to its initial settings.

Then you set YOUR password and lock HIM out ! ;)

They should both be able to run off one router. Sounds like your son reconfigured it and set a password. If his laptop is working, then that's what happened.

::yes::
Right now, as I am typing this, we have 3 computers and one iPod touch all on the internet at the same time on the same router.

I agree with the others - when your son got his laptop, he re-configured the router for his computer. Your DD can’t get into the wi-fi because everything was changed.

It seems you need a password...

You need to password protect your network anyway. Otherwise, your neighbors and anyone else passing by can use your internet for free.

Your DS needs to give your DD the WEP key that was created when he set up his secure network connection. He should have written it down somewhere. (If he didn't, you are probably going to have to kill that network name and create another, so that you can see what the new WEP key is -- it only shows when the connection is first set up; after that it's starred out.)

If you can hard wire into the router (plug a laptop or desktop into it), you can usually either recover the WEP key that way by accessing the admin terminal (usually at http://192.168.1.1 or something like that), or changing it.

There's also other more "creative" methods especially if he only used standard WEP encryption.
