Help!!! Child is sick!!

Ok after planning and planning for months I thought I had covered everything, now it seems with less than a week to go my son is getting a cold. My biggest worry is that he also has asthma which is usually only a problem when he is sick and more often than not we usually end up in the emergency room for a dose of prednizone to help him get over it. I am now concerned with the humidity and his cold that going on this trip might be asking for trouble. Any tips on keeping this a magical trip? Should I just load up on cold medicine and his puffers and not worry?

I was at Disney in November of 2006 when my 8 month old decided to run 103 degrees fever. We ended up taking her to the emergency room. The fever luckily broke and we just watched her and took it a little easier. We wouldn't keep the baby out in the night air. I actually let my husband go run around at the parks at night while I took Gabrielle back to the room and made sure she went to sleep on schedule.

just bring all of the meds that you need for the trip. There is a pharmacy about 10 - 20 minutes away if you need it.

Also, I don't know the age of your child but the mediclinic that Disney referred us to did not see infants. We had gone there first and then when they refused to see the baby we headed to the hospital.

Every trip now I bring Gabrielle's meds (prescriptions, tylenol, ear drops, thermometer, pedialite etc.). Be prepared.

As a parent of a child with asthma, I know what you mean! Our last few trips, he's gotten bad with it from the humidity.

Do you have a resort with a window that can open? Fresh air can help.

I know a nebulizer is big and heavy, but you may want to bring one just in case.

If you get sick, there is a clinic right close by that will send a doctor to you room (had to use them twice). The front desk should have the information, and it is so worth it! The fee was about $300 plus meds but my insurance company reimbursed me 100% (shocked me - it's an HMO, Optimum Choice, and they are usually hard to get to cover some stuff, so that was a bonus). The place is called East Coast Medical Network. It was so much better to let my kids rest in the room to wait for the doctor rather than taking a cab to the hospital and waiting in the ER. They brought tests and medicines with them, and were so kind.

Thanks so much for all the info. I just returned from the drugstore and I now have a drug supply to heal a small army! I cannot yet tell which way his cold is going I feel he is rocking on the border of getting better and getting worse Oh well I shall know in a few days. It really is the humidity that is worrying me the most. Will be crossing my fingers!

Is your son on a preventative, daily asthma medication? My two of my three kids are asthmatic, and whenever they have a flare-up we up the dose of pulmicort to twice a day to help them get stabilized.

A few years ago we did end up at the hospital in Celebration with my youngest, even though we were giving him daily nebulizer treatments on the trip. We were only in the MK for about an hour when he had serious problems. We spent the rest of the day at the hospital, and let him rest the next day.

WDW was great. When we returned and explained what had happened, they gave us complimentary day passes to make up for the day we had lost.

Enjoy your trip, and just take it slow if it is really humid.

I agree, if you can put your son on a preventative medication for the asthma. My son has mild asthma, but becomes severe as soon as he is sick. Ask your Dr. if a daily steroid inhaler is appropriate to use while he is sick. It does need to be used daily though, so even if he seems like he's much better, I would continue to use it during the trip.

I agree with above post - prepare the best you can.

The only consolation I can say is Disney is so helpful with sick kids. If you need something - call your concierge first - see what they can do.
If you get in trouble at the park, go to the first aid station.

Last year my 2 yr. old an accident in the park. Long story short - my husband got a short back lot tour in the ambulance (while I was in the back with our son). Then we were told to turn in our receipt from the cab drive back. Disney paid for the ambulance ride and cab ride back.

Hi just wanted to thank everyone for all the great advice. We got back from Disney on Oct 5 and it all turned out well! The weather turned out great with no real noticable humidity that really bothered us the whole week . Love bug now that's a different story HAHA! My son is on a daily preventative asthma medication and I just made sure he was well hydrated and carried the emergency steroid puffer at all times. He was fine, the only time I noticed anything really was at night back in the room, alot of coughing during his sleep. Not sure if there was something in the room bothering his lungs or maybe the air conditioning but in the morning outside he was fine. Thanks again for all the help.

Call your doctor and tell them you want to have your child looked at. The day before we left for disney my 4yr was complaining is throat hurt and my 7yr old had a stuffy nose. Of course the doctor didn't want to see them said it is a cold wait a couple days and see what happens. I told them we were leaving for disney the next day and I wanted both seen before we left. They doctor did see my boys and guess what both had strep throat. They were given antibiotics and were fine in a day. The 4yr old was cranky the whole 17 drive but everyone was happy in disney. Also read the threads about the urgent care near disney, it seems lots of people are unhappy with the care given there. Good to know if there is a health issue go straight to celebration er.

My DS1 was on antibiotics for our trip last year, had brought him to the doctor a few days before... ear infection!

WELL... the doctor knew we were going to WDW, so she prescribed a ONE A DAY dose, so we wouldn't have to tote it to the park.. just give it in the morning or before going to bed.

ANYWAY... before even leaving home, this medicine (like many antibiotics) gave him .... yup, diareaha (sp?).

Well... we MADE SURE we brought bananas... the doctor says that they would help... and they did. Every morning and for a snack later. He had some, but it wasn't as bad as without them.
