My dd13 is taking her placement test for Catholic HS this Saturday (OMG, I can't believe she is heading to HS next year :guilty: ) Does anyone know of a practice website or book I can get to let her see what kinds of things will be on the test?? Do they all use a standard test or is there different ones?? I know for school she has a site she can practice for the state tests, I just wondered if there is such a thing for the HS placemetn test.

TIA..

It's been a while since I've needed to concern myself with high school entrance exams, but my HS has a standardized test that is very similar to other standardized tests. They're going to look for a broad range of math and verbal skills and some science.

I don't know of any practice tests, but maybe practice her reading comprehension, analogies, and some math problems will help a lot. The goal is to get her placed in the right class level so you don't necessarily want her to ace the test and then have problems once she's placed in a higher level class.

I am glad you said that, Cranky. I don't know about the tests, but this is exactly what I was thinking. Your best bet might be to help her get lots of rest, instead of trying to prepare for the tests.

Good luck!

Thanks...She is actually an all A student when she was attending regular school but she has been at home for this year and last (not really homeschool, she does a virtual charter school at home) so she is kinda out of the loop about these types of tests. I'm not as concerned as her "acing" it as I am about getting her back into this type of test mode. Just they type of questions, not so much the actual content of the questions if that makes any sense. However on the other hand, I don't want her to get too intimidated and blow it when I know she has the smarts and potential to do well. While I don't want her in a class that is way too advanced, nor do I want her in a class that is so easy she is bored.

There are two standard tests that are commonly used for the high school placement exams, the HSPT and the COOP. If you go to the website for your archdiocese you can usually find information regarding the testing they use.

The Archdiocese of Detroit uses the HSPT. My DD took it the weekend before Thanksgiving. We studied using two books (each covers both tests) from B&N, the Princeton Review and one other. The test covers the areas found in the book and may also chose to add a section of Science or Religion (basic Catechism). The AOD adds the Science section. We wish the book had a section on Science, DD said the exam on that part was difficult.

The books has pre and post tests, explains each section in detail, has extensive practice exercises and gives hints for testing in each area. I think the preparation helped her feel more at ease on test day. HTH, Amy
