Help! BWV room for the "mobility challenged"?!?

Good morning, all! I need your bright ideas!

Last saturday I booked a 1-BR villa for our very spur of the moment graduation/birthday/celebration/getaway , and now need someone to give me some input on BWV room location.

Part of the reason we picked BWV was due to the mobility issues I'm going to have this trip from hip and knee problems. BWV is the perfect location for kind of an insular, romantic stay. Will spend most of the time at EPCOT for F&G, some MGM for Star Wars, maybe a day at another park...but, the rest of the time at resort, pool, and boardwalk entertainment.

I can ECV around the parks, but, I really want to try to get a room that's near an elevator, with fairly easy access to the actual boardwalk & dock.

What should I do? I was just reading on WDWIG that BWV doesn't take faxed room requests anymore. However, I do have a Dr's appt today and phys. ther. appts too, would they take a faxed room request if I can document a special need? I'm not a DVC member, so I can't call member services.

If I can get in touch with someone at the BWV, what location should I request? *Is* there an area that's near an elevator with a quick route to the lakefront shops, restaurants & boat launch?

Are your renting an ECV from an off-site vendor or do you intend to rent one daily from the parks? The park ECVs go quickly. I'm a big fan of renting from an off-site vendor so you have the ECV 24/7. I use Walker but I think all the vendors are comparable. I request to be close to the elevator but don't always get it as Non smoking is my first request. DH and I just spent 20 days at BWV and had a great time.Hope you have a wonderful trip.

None of the DVC resorts consider faxes for room requests. They go by what is on the reservation.

If you are renting points, ask the member to call MS and get "near the elevators/medical request" on your reservations. If you are going to have an ECV consider requesting an HA room - more room for the ECV and I believe most of the HA rooms are either on ground floor or relatively close to the elevators.

If you have reserved via CRO, call back and ask for the same request to be put on your reservation.

If you haven't already, post your question on the DisAbilities Forum - there are many posters there that can give you good advice in this area.

In January, we stayed in a real nice HA 1 BR at BWV. It was only for one night, so I'm not sure of the room #, I THINK it was #2047. It was over the store right near the corner of the Village Green, so it had a real nice view of all the "action" on the Boardwalk. The only thing that seemed kind of strange to us was that it had a solid wall about 3 1/2 feet up-how could anyone in a wheel chair see over that? But it was a fairly wide wall, so we loved that we could put our drinks on the balcony wall as we stood and watched everything, including Illuminations.

We aren't renting points, just paying cash with the AP discount. I really wish now that we *were* renting points, because the DVC member could make a room request...

anyway, I appreciate the advice, and will try the folks over at the DisAbilities board & see what they can tell me, too.

Luci - CRO should be able to make the same request for you. It's not a guarantee, but should get high priority. Just call whoever you called to make the ressie. If it was through a TA, have them make the request. For cash ressies, CRO controls it, not MS. Good luck!

If you are doing a cash reservation thru CRO, you can call the Resort Special Reservations number: 407-939-7807 (TTY: 407-939-7670)

You can talk to the CMs there about what special features are in a handicapped accessible room. Since you have hip and knee problems, you might find that the raised seat toilet with grab bars is helpful.
