DH and I just ordered a new mattress, which is being delivered two weeks from today. Now he wants to take everything out of the bedroom and have the carpet steamcleaned before the new bed goes in. This led me to say, "Can we paint, too?" 5 yrs ago when we built this house, we never thought we'd live in it this long, so we painted everything basic blah white, and I hate it!

Now here's the hard part: The bedroom is SMALL (I'm guessing 12X16) and will have a king size bed, two dressers, one nightstand and file cabinet that doubles as the other nightstand. I get bored with bedding, and like to swap it out frequently. So, I don't want to match paint to bedding! DH sleeps days, I sleep nights. It has one east facing window. The ceiling/trim/wood work are all a very light cedarwood (really, the ceiling too, don't ask:confused3). The carpet is an ugly neutral beigeish/grayish berber (that barely shows by the time all the furniture gets in there).

We have no style;), so need all your suggestions for color choice!

TIA!
Terri

If you like to change your bedding out then I would go with a neutral, either in the tan or grey family.

I agree with the neutral, but I do like "color" and get afraid when I look at the "darker" shades of neutral! How do you ever choose?

There are a lot of beautiful colours right now. I like greens for bedrooms the right shade (mid-tone) are generally very relaxing and soothing. Try and stay away from anything that is bright as this creates more energy thus not relaxing.

Good luck!!

According to Feng Shui's bedroom tips, use skin tone colors, they are the most inviting and calming. That will work well with your ceiling color, and changing of your bedding/curtains.

But...... your room is much too crowded for a proper night's sleep - this is according to the bedroom tips. :lmao:

How about just an accent wall? Sometimes I find that works better in small rooms (aka my small apartment!!) My accent wall is a sage green color which sounds ugly but it actually works really well in the room and adds a little something!

We're thinking of a light mocha and teal. We've got the whole sage accent wall and neutral cream look right now. It looks fine...but it feels very dated--sort of late 90's-ish/early 2000's. That may be because of the oak trim (that's very late 90's).

I can't do much about the trim---so we're purposely picking colors from the "color trends of 2011" prediction palette with the hopes that we won't feel outdated again for awhile.

Incidentally, this also means we're going to gold and blue for the family room and gold and plum for the dining room.

Who knows how accurate it is....but we like the colors and it will be something fresh!

We have an accent wall in what I call the "cell" (aka the third bedroom, which is literally 7X9 ), I painted the outside wall a "martial arts red" and the rest of the walls tan, and just love it.

And I know we have wayyyyy too much in this size room, but we've always promised ourselves a kingsized bed, so it'll just have to fit in a fullsized bed-room!

I definately want a "relaxing" neutral (since I have sleep issues), and would be open to any exact color numbers or names that you'd want to share!

(And my skintone would be "pastey white middleage flabby Yooper", which wouldn't be very appealing:laughing:)

Keep the ideas coming!

:laughing::laughing: not necessarily your skin-tone, silly, but skin-tones..... light pink, beige, along those lines.

You are funny. ♥

My bedroom is an off-white or magnolia colour on the walls and white ceiling. I think it works well (but then I would ;)). It will also keep the room feeling airy. A dark colour would make the room seem smaller.

Green is also a very relaxing colour for the bedroom.

We just painted our extra bedroom a gray and it's so awesome! And the best is, it seems to look different colors depending what's against it. Like, at first it almost looked like it had a purple tint to it and then I put up light blue curtains and it looked like a shade of blue! Something like that might be good if you change your bedding a lot because the color might seem to change too!

Coincidently I am (supposed) to be painting my bedroom. I say supposed to because I have been waiting months for dh to finish re-doing the walls, trim and doors so I can start. The paints chips I have set aside are by Glidden, although I will take them to Sherwin Williams to color match for me.
One is called Tasted coconut and I really can't figiure out why. I have toasted coconut and it really didn't look like this. Anyway, its an mix with orange and dark tan. The other is called Palomino Gold.

If you're leaning towards browns and tans in your bedding, I would suggest a bluish gray on the walls. Still very neutral and calming. Or a warm cream. If you were open to painting your trim, I would paint it (including the ceiling) a warm cream color and go a dark muted color on the walls (like an expresso brown), so it feels cozy and fades into the background.

I've made a lot of bad color choices over the many years of decorating but seem to finally be doing better.

Right now I have a soft, pale green that is nearly but not quite a seafoam. Think Martha Stewartish. I wish I knew the color for you but it is Benjamin Moore paint. That's all we use.

I have always liked darker colors but now am finding the pale shades are so easy to decorate around. I had Waverly like print toppers on my windows in there that looked great but got new blinds and took them down. Right now I have one of those narrow striped light weight quilts with every color imagineable on the bed and tan carpet. The green seems to go with anything. Really, even reds. I don't care for blacks to decorate with but probably it would be ok there too.

Greens and yellows are both rather neutral much to my surprise.

I have a light tan in my main rooms that is called "blond" by Ben. Moore. I love it too.

everyone, for the suggestions, and it's my

2000th post:banana::cool1::dance3:

Considering I largely lurk, it's not surprising it took me ten years to get to that post!

Any ideas from anyone else? Everyone has been so helpful so far, thank you!

Terri

Have you used the behr paint website?

There are lots of pictures and pretty decorated rooms to give you inspiration.

I have a nice shade called Shabby Chic(Benjamin Moore) in my family room. It's like a tea with milk color. With those bedding sets, I would probably go with a darker brown.

We just bought 3 gallons of Glidden's Belgian Waffle color for my room and will paint it as soon as we get our new king bed out!

It goes really well with our bedding, which is a lighter blue (really close to Glidden's Tropical Lagoon). I went with the color we chose because it probably would go well with the color palette I tend to choose for bedding.
