I am hoping I can get some ideas here. My DS is 17 months old and we will be staying at the GF. He really is a mellow little guy, but he loves to explore everything right now. Has anyone else gone with a toddler this age? What did you do? Can anyone please help me and give me ideas so that our room will be a safer place. Thanks, Kim

Make sure all medications are locked in your suitcase or very high out of reach. Take safety plugs for the outlets and a roll of tape to secure lamp cords etc. You may also need to move some free standing lamps that could be pulled over easly. TAke a tolet lock or keep bathroom door closed at all times. If the bathroom is secure and you leave it open, throw a towel over the top to prevent little fingers from getting smashed by a slamming door. EVen if you little one will sleep with you, get a crib of some type so you will have a safe place to put him during busy times. If you have a balcony, make sure it is locked and secure at all times. I also would put a chair or table in front of it when my DS was little. Upon arrival, double check the floor for any missed items such as pills or choking hazards. GEt on you knees and see it for your little guys level. Remove the bed spread out of his reach.(YUCKY). TAke some favorite toys so he will be occupied and also remember that supervision is the #1 safety rule.

Now relax and know it will all be ok and have a blast.

My boys will be just turning 3 and 16 months when we leave in April. I am taking the following:

Nightlight so we can have some light in the room but keep the bathroom door shut at night

Outlet covers or even duct tape to cover the outlets not in use

few twist ties tightly tied /tape to bunch up any long electrical cords so to minimize temptation to pull or play with

door handle cover for the bathroom so the oldest can’t open it.. (assuming it’s a regular knob handle)

nonslip bath mat for in the tub (just getting a cheap one at walmart)

I have a small inflatable bath spout cover that I will be taking

I will be looking over the room for any small things missed by housekeeping (including under the bed).

Any tables with sharp edges covered with washtowels or ask housekeeping to remove (for instance if we had a small coffee table in the room I would ask housekeeping to remove it b/c I am sure it would be too tempting for them to try to climb on it etc).

Make sure there is no furniture near any windows

Keep the hotel room door latched/chained so the little ones can’t open it

I am bringing a small duck bath thermometer that we use at home to check water temps for baths

Blind cords- put up and way ..even if this means taping it to the window frame (use masking tape) so that there is no chance of strangulation

I definately second the outlet covers! When we took our DS, he was 20 months and became obsessed with the outlets. We never thought about it because they were always covered at home. He would not leave them alone. I had to ask guest services at ASMo. to get me some covers. :earsboy:

To add to the previous posts, I always bring a simple plastic over-the-door shoe holder to hold my toiletries. That way they are totally out of my ds's reach. I found one for about $5 at Walmart that has clear plastic pockets and is perfect for travel.

Instead of buying twist ties for the cords, we took a package of mulit-colored pipe cleaners to use. This does double duty as you can then use it in the lines to play with - my son loves doing this, and when he's desperate at the grocery, he even resorts to using the twist ties!

This may sound a bit goofy, but since little DD is a climber, we also remove any glass tabletops and store them in a closet, or behind a couch so that if she were to climb on it the glass wouldn't break. We bring a couple of packs of knob covers (Wal-mart $1.94 for 2 ) they only fit round knobs (which we cross our fingers for) so that DD isn't trying to go to Disney without us! Have a Great trip!

and locking with toddler inside. We had this issue come up when traveling with DD on a business trip. We realized that DD could go into the bathroom and lock the door by pressing the button on the door knob. We would not have been able to get her out since we didn't have one of those special "keys" to open the lock from the outside.

We ended up duct taping the lock mechanism in the jamb so that the door would still close but the lock was disabled.
